The Circus

Unlike Maureen Dowd in her most recent New York Times column:

I’m looking around Scotiabank Arena, the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and it’s a depressing sight. It’s two-for-the-price-of-one in half the arena. The hockey rink is half curtained off, but even with that, organizers are scrambling at the last minute to cordon off more sections behind thick black curtains, they say due to a lack of sales. I paid $177 weeks in advance. (I passed on the pricey meet-and-greet option.) On the day of the event, some unsold tickets are slashed to single digits.

I get reassigned to another section as the Clintons’ audience space shrinks. But even with all the herding, I’m still looking at large swaths of empty seats — and I cringe at the thought that the Clintons will look out and see that, too. It was only four years ago, after all, that Canadians were clamoring to buy tickets to see the woman who seemed headed for history.

It’s a sad contrast with the sold-out boffo book tour of Michelle Obama, who’s getting a lot more personal for the premium prices. But introspection has never been within the Clintons’ range.

I can’t fathom why the Clintons would make like aging rock stars and go on a tour of Canada and the U.S. at a moment when Democrats are hoping to break the stranglehold of their cloistered, superannuated leadership and exult in a mosaic of exciting new faces.

What is the point? It’s not inspirational. It’s not for charity. They’re not raising awareness about a cause, like Al Gore with global warming. They’re only raising awareness about the Clintons.

I do not feel a bit sorry for the Clintons. It was always about the Clintons. Never about anything else.

While the circus performance is going on it looks grand and is exciting but as the tents are struck and the equipment packed away just how cheap and tawdry and phony it all was becomes clear. It was always tawdry. It was just grand when the lights were on and the band was playing.

“It was always about the Clintons. Never about anything else.”

A point made to me, and that I then made, way back in 1991 by my AK buddy in the newspaper business. Some of those AK Clinton Guv stories are a lot more than VRWC. The state police were like mafia muscle.

This may just be testing the waters, but my bet is that she fully intends to run unless the powers that be have a quiet and dead serious conversation with her. But they have a lot of dirt on people from over the years. And they won’t be afraid to use it. She won’t go quietly unless she sees the handwriting on the wall. It won’t be Uncle Joe or Crazy Bernie or even a 1/1024th Cherokee who convince her. Maybe some guy imitating the Greeks……

I’ts weird, but for the Democrats, damn damaging. For a 2020 run, it’s not too early for some candidates names to be trotted out. But the old guard won’t offer support or even give way.
If Trump doesn’t run, I expect to see maybe 15-18 candidates on the R side. If he does? They better be wearing a raincoat. Keep an eye on Mitt.
How many women out there still say they’ve been waiting all their live to vote for the wife of a former President?
But for sheer entertainment, I’d say Trump vs Michelle. No re-runs please.

I’ve always assumed that Hillary was going to have to maintain some level of media presence because if she drops out of sight, the Democratic establishment will be more likely to point out that she is one of the main reasons Trump was elected President.

As I have been saying since the election, I think that pure self-defense prevents them from making that connection.

They need to go away. PD may be right, but I think it is mostly ego. I dont see her running in 2020. Not seeing anyone writing about how wonderful it would be if she ran again.

Of course my fear is that the Democrats decide to find their own Trump. Someone with lots of bankruptcies, business success dependent upon political connections and tax lawyers, corrupt, a liar, assaulting women, a braggart in general and someone who brags about never reading anything, ignorance about foreign affairs, a penchant for name calling, a lack of leadership traits, and unmitigated narcissism. It won’t be hard to find someone with a couple of those traits, Clinton certainly had some, but how do they find someone just as bad, or God forbid, even worse?

    Steve,

    Michael Avenatti?

I’m not following news about potential 2020 candidates at all, but he’s one I keep hearing about and he seems to match Trump’s egoism and hubris in many ways.

Rest easy Steve, Only one Trump.
