Snow Day

Tally in backyard after Feb 1, 2008 snowfall
Last night we had the largest snowfall we’ve had in some time, six to eight inches, with more expected later. As you might expect rush hour this morning was crazed. That doesn’t usually concern me but today I was functioning as a judge of election in a nursing home, processing absentee votes. It took me nearly an hour to drive the roughly 25 blocks to the nursing home.

A couple of the folks working with me today have been working on early voting. They tell me that the response this time has been extraordinary so I expect a very heavy total turnout here in the city of Chicago on Tuesday. The last time I recall this sort of reaction was in 1992 and voters were in a foul mood then. I suspect we may have something similar in November.

Cook County is one of the bluest areas in the country . How can you tell anything about how Repbublicans s and independents in a city that lacks both?

Also, if the primary strictly for President or is it the real Democratic Primary since the Democratic primary is the real election is Chicago?

What you are probably realy seeing is the future of the rest of the U.S. where the Republican party will be irrelevant to politics and the Democratic primary is the real election.

For one thing my wife is a staunch Republican. My father was a lifelong Republican, active in Republican politics. My mother is a Republican and was active in Republican politics until fairly recently.

Chicago isn’t completely lacking in Republicans, neither is Cook County, and several of the collar counties are solidly Republican. I have a broad circle of friends and acquaintances in areas of the Chicago metropolitan area that are as Republican as Chicago itself is Democratic.

And the idea that the Republican Party is or will become irrelevant is exaggerated.

Cook County went over 70% Democratic in 2004. That is a massive rout in politics and you have to wonder why the few Republicans even bother to vote.

I read that Chicago has not had a Republican Mayor since the 1920’s. Chicago is a good example that political parties do not make come backs because people think they will.

Also, since the minorities that used to live in Chicago are moving out the suburbs, the suburbs are becoming more Democratic.

A good rule of thumb is that if the public school is less than 60% whites, the town or area is safely Democratic. Considering that the public schools in Chicago are less than 10% white, there is no chance that the Republicans will ever be relevant again.

As the demographics of the U.S. becomes more like Chicago, politics will look more like Chicago, a one party state that is massively corrupt.
