Qila, the day he was diagnosed

The picture of Qila above was taken the day he was diagnosed with cancer. Click for a larger image.

We’ve had an enormous outpouring of support from friends, family, acquaintances and just passers-by in the form of emails, comments on the post linked above, and phone calls. Thank you, everyone.

Two of my sisters sent a beautiful arrangement of flowers. Our vet and her staff sent a lovely card that included a notice that a goat had been purchased through Heifer International in Qila’s honor. Qila would have liked that. A herding dog, he loved goats. And he also dearly loved children, whom this gift will help.

I measured my life by walking Qila morning, noon, and night and by feeding him morning and evening. Once he was diagnosed with cancer caring for him was added to that mix—giving him his medicines and supplements, watching him for problems, and, for the last month as he started to become incontinent, changing the pad in his belly-band and letting him out to eliminate frequently.

Now I feel rudderless. That will fade with time but right now it’s pretty hard.

I’m very sad to hear it. It sounds like you were both very lucky to have each other.

  • My sympathies. I lost a Siberian Husky in January of 2005, and a Peach Tabby cat this last Christmas. You just can’t replace them.

Thanks for all your work on the imported protiens.

That quote from Renoir? Pain changes, and most of the time, fades. Beauty remains as long as memory. God bless all of us creatures.

  • I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. I took care of my cat Pepper for a whole year before she died (last Nov) and it’s taken me months to not go check on her every so often. It passes, but slowly.
