Process and Product

Why are people so surprised when successful people continue to do the things that brought them success? Once a student has been admitted to medical school on the basis of single-minded dedication to grades in a very narrow range of courses, it’s a bit too late to complain that doctors don’t have much of what used to be referred to as a “bedside manner”. The sympathetic listeners have already been told to go peddle their papers elsewhere.

Just so you know, I don’t se that many people taking what used to be called the “pre-med” major as undergrads anymore. I read dozens/hundreds of CVs every year. Just don’t see it much anymore. Among my staff I have literature majors (multiple), math, pharmacy, engineering (multiple) and economics majors as undergrads. So, if you are suggesting that they all have followed the same narrow range of courses that may have been somewhat true in the past. Not so much now. If you are suggesting that they will have studied a narrow range of courses because they had to major in something, that is definitely true. Addressing your larger point, yes, a lot of docs are nerds and geeks.
