More on Not Attacking Iran

As was noted by many the other day including James Joyner and QandO, now-retired Adm. Fallon, formerly the head of CENTCO, the detachment of our military responsible for matters in the Gulf and Afghanistan, gave his first interview since his retirement to CNN and denied, in as categorical a fashion as a man in his position could be expected to do, that the U. S. was preparing to attack Iran. It would seem to me that he’d be in a position to know.

As regularly as clockwork, bloggers who IMO are otherwise pretty sensible characterized Adm. Fallon’s statements as a “non-denial denial”.

I continue to believe what I have for some time: that the U. S. will not bomb or invade Iran in force by the end of Bush’s term. I also have a challenge for those of you who believe otherwise: what evidence would convince you that you’re mistaken? Other than Bush’s term finishing without an attack on Iran, of course. Is your position disprovable?

FWIW I’ve already produced a list of things that would convince me that an invasion or other attack on Iran was in the offing.

  • Bush offering security guarantees would do it, Dave.

  • You may recall that security guarantees was one of the items on my list of “carrots”.

  • Andy Link

Bush has put security guarantees on the table if Iran’s suspends its enrichment program during negotiations.
