Juxtaposition

The Hill reports that some Democrats would like to change the subject:

Frustrated Democrats hoping to elevate their election fortunes have a resounding message for party leaders: Stop talking so much about Russia.

Democratic leaders have been beating the drum this year over the ongoing probes into the Trump administration’s potential ties to Moscow, taking every opportunity to highlight the saga and forcing floor votes designed to uncover any business dealings the president might have with Russian figures.

But rank-and-file Democrats say the Russia-Trump narrative is simply a non-issue with district voters, who are much more worried about bread-and-butter economic concerns like jobs, wages and the cost of education and healthcare.

As Thomas Lifson notes at American Thinker:

Despite the continuing absence of any evidence that Donald Trump “colluded” with Russia to steal the election from its rightful winner, MSNBC’s Joy Reid did her own version of Lady Macbeth’s obsession, in effect muttering, “Out, out, damn defeat,” by invoking the Russia excuse 56 times in the first hour of her program yesterday.

they are likely to get their wish. It would be darned hard to talk more about Russia.

I do think it’s a huge gamble for the Democrats to stay overly focused on Russia. If it turns out to be a nothingburger, then it would all have been counterproductive. It’s better, I think, to let the investigation proceed and focus on bread-and-butter issues. Russia can easily be brought back to the center ring when and if something is actually discovered.

Pretty much all of my progressive friends believe that criminal Trump-Russia collusion is basically a fact. They just want the evidence to come out so Trump can be impeached or, at least, be mortally wounded politically. Most do not see any irony there. It reminds me a lot of birtherism actually.

On the other hand, I wish Republicans would focus on bread-and-butter issues as well. Many of my conservative friends on Facebook are still posting Clinton meme’s and right-wing Clinton “news.” Move on people!

Counterproductive? It’s accomplished exactly what it was intended to do. It’s deflected criticism away from the DNC.

I’ve never thought for a nanosecond that The Donald colluded with the Russians. I wouldn’t put it past Roger Stone, though.

I have never thought, nor do I know a real life liberal who thought, that Trump colluded with the Russians. Maybe one of his campaign people, but probably not. No, the Russian stuff serves two purposes. One, it looks like the Russians really did try to interfere. That should be addressed. Second, it serves the same purpose as all o the Benghazi investigations. While this worked great for the GOP, that particular tactic may be wearing thin. The Democrats would also do well to work on pointing out the incompetence of the Trump admin.

    Slightly off topic but related.

Apparently Bernie Sanders and his wife is under FBI investigation over a bank loan gone bad.

So in 2016, not only were both major party candidates under FBI investigation, but both major Democratic candidates were under FBI investigation. Talk about meager choices!

  • I guess there are two ways of looking at that. One is that once you’ve reached a certain level of prominence (and wealth) it’s pretty hard to stay completely within the law. Your network of activities is quite large and the laws are pretty expansive.

The other is that once a politician has reached a certain level it’s practically inevitable that he or she is a crook.

I know which I believe but that’s probably just because I’ve known a lot of politicians over the years.
