How to Increase Trump’s Influence

There are a few stories being commented on today. For example, progressives are beginning to figure out that they can’t just push their agenda through the conference because there aren’t enough of them to do it. It’s not just intransigent Republicans. It’s Senate Democrats who disagree with them. It’s the Senate parliamentarian doing her job.

But mostly Donald Trump is sucking all of the air out of the room again via his appearance at CPAC (an event to which I pay no attention). When will media outlets figure out that the way to increase his influence is to devote so much of their attention to him? That’s how he secured the Republican nomination for the presidency in 2016. It’s how he got elected while spending a fraction of the money the Clinton campaign did.

Cover? Yes. But then move on.

I recognize the media are on the horns of a dilemma. They capture more eyeballs when they devote all of their time to Trump. Just say “No”.

But if they dont cover him then they are proving they are leftists. As I said, covering Trump creates issues not seen with other people. (Ultimately making money tops everything so he will get the coverage.)

  • As I said they’re on the horns of a dilemma.

“If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” Obi Won Kenobi.

In this case; from offering advice in moments of desperation; it’s 24/7 punditry.

I would certainly agree that their intensive and noxious coverage provided and fueled a continuing forum for him. However, I think you underestimate the chord he tapped into. People feel divorced from and neglected by the “elites” and their hypocrisy and abandonment of the middle class.

One of the best political cartoons I saw this week was an identical picture of kids in a detention buildings with three different captions being delivered by a reporter:

Under Obama – “and here we are with Pres Obama’s immigrant detention centers…”

Under Trump – “and here we are with Trump holding kids in cages.”

Under Biden – “and here we are with Pres Biden’s temporary immigrant housing units, holding kids for their safety.”

Its more than just commercial considerations. Its propaganda and complete political bias.

The propaganda lies in ignoring the fact that the Trump administration did something different. They deliberately separated families going it would discourage immigration. They then lost track of the families so that they could not reunite kids with parents. In the current case they are using the detention centers only for kids who arrived unaccompanied, which will exclude some of the younger kids caged by there Trump people. Under the Obama admin it was an unintended consequence of a policy and once they figured out what was happening they stopped it.

This is what Trump supporters do all of the time. You leave out details just enough so that you can justify anything.
