Disinvestment in Education?

Speaking of people who’ve taken leave of their senses, yesterday I heard an interview with Elizabeth Warren, candidate for the Senate in Massachusetts. I don’t usually butt into the political affairs of states other than my own but Dr. Warren said something I found bewildering. She complained about the “disinvestment in education”.

What disinvestment in education? This year we’re poised to spend around $1 trillion on education. That’s more overall, more per student, and more per capita than just about any other country by a significant margin.

Our problem isn’t disinvestment in education. It’s in value received for dollars spent.

I say this in the context of living in a city whose public school teachers, half of whom are already among the top 10% of income earners in the city, are poised to go on strike next week for, among other things, higher pay.
