Ten Best Things About the 2007 Academy Awards

10. Jon Stewart wasn’t the Master of Ceremonies.
9. Debbie Allen didn’t do the choreography.
8. Martin Scorsese finally got an Academy Award as Best Director.
7. Fewer montages than previous years.
6. Helen Mirren’s tribute to ERII.
5. Judy Dench was spared from attending the ceremony in order to have knee surgery.
4. Jennifer Hudson’s tearful acceptance speech.
3. No lame Rob Lowe/Snow White sketch.
2. The single genuinely funny moment: cutting off Al Gore as he pretended to announce he was running for president.
and the #1 best thing about the 2007 Academy Awards:

1. They’re over.

Generally, I agree with Tom Shales’s assessment (which is remarkable of itself). On the other hand I thought that Nikki Finke’s take was a bit cruel. I’m glad she mentioned Steve Carell’s and Greg Kinnear’s awful scripted comments leading up to presenting the award for Best Sound Effects.

I noticed #7 (fewer montages). It was regrettable. I love those things.

  • I haven’t watch it for years, but I’m glad Scorsese finally got his oscar. He should have gotten it for Goodfellas, but this is better than nothing.

  • I liked Forrest Whitaker’s acceptance speech, too. But that’s probably because I like his work.

The montages were good this year, I thought, with the exception of the awful “America” one (I missed the intro to it and had no idea what it was driving at). But nothing was as good as the hilarious “gay cowboys” montage last year.
