Nip is gone

Just minutes ago our bunny, Nip, died.

I wrote about him and his companion, Tuck, and posted pictures of them here and here.

Nip went into the nesting box this evening—something he hadn’t done in a long while. He soiled himself while he was in there. Also something he never did. We cleaned him and replaced him in his crate. We noticed that his breathing had become very labored. A few minutes later he kicked violently and then he was gone. I held him for twenty minutes, checking for any signs of life.

Nip was 11 1/2 years old and was a great, feisty bunny right up until the end with Tuck guarding him all the way.

I honestly don’t know whether rabbits and dogs have eternal souls. But I’m pretty sure that if they don’t, neither do we.

  • So sorry to hear about Nip’s demise—he will be missed. When we lost our Bunny last year it was a sad, sad day. Doug made him a little cardboard coffin, wrapped him in a piece of velveteen and placed him under the sugar maple.

Bunny’s combination of quietude and feistiness reminds me of how you talk about Nip. Nice combination of qualities in anybody. See you Thursday. Love, ann

  • I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. I don’t know the answer to the question about eternal souls either but I agree with you. I don’t want to think of a Heaven where beings that love unconditionally can’t go gain entry. I prefer to believe that someday you’ll be reunited with Nip.

  • Ah, I’m sorry.

A soul recognizes a soul regardless of the shape of its container.

  • I’m sorry to hear about Nip. I can see from the pictures that he was a lovely bunny.
