I wanted to remark on Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington and address to a joint session of Congress. I think he had multiple objectives. The first, of course, was to refocus the West’s and particularly the United States’s attention on the war in Ukraine. There had been some signs of flagging support.
I think he also wanted attention. Take it from someone who comes from a family of professional entertainers: a desire for attention is part of the package. He got it. He’s a world figure. Name two other Ukrainian presidents.
I don’t know what’s going to happen in Ukraine and I honestly don’t know how anyone else can, either. Practically everything we hear is propaganda from one side or another. The United States will supply more arms to Ukraine. Since those are produced primarily in the U. S., giving Ukraine arms also functions as a sort of backdoor subsidy to the manufacturing companies.
“Since those are produced primarily in the U. S., giving Ukraine arms also functions as a sort of backdoor subsidy to the manufacturing companies.”
Death in exchange for profits and political gain. Now, about that debate concerning misguided vs evil intent that pops up here from time to time.
Ukraine’s war effort to defend itself from Russia depends on continued and long-term western support, particularly from the US. Zelenskyy will do and say what he must to keep support from a fickle Congress.
And yes to the propaganda, it is pervasive. But there are still fundamental truths about war and analysis of capabilities is still possible.
Ukraine was invaded and wants to fight the invaders. They are getting arms from us and Europe, mostly us. We cant force Ukraine to fight, they could just give in to Russia. We have no leverage to stop that. Every military action can be seen as a backdoor subsidy to the military-industrial complex so its a pretty banal point and support should be judged upon its merits.
I know that most of the right was supporting Putin so they are naturally opposed to Zelensky but it is appalling that Americans are now opposing the efforts of a people to fight for their freedom. We certainly didnt get these complaints in Iraq, Afghanistan, Viet Nam.
Did he want attention? I doubt he has really been lacking for attention and he was a world figure already so I dont really quite get this claim. I think its mostly just that if you are going to beg for money its probably best done in person.

Steve
How do some people become so politically biased and/or blind?
I know that most of the right was supporting Putin
When Putin invaded Crimea during Obama’s presidency, the ho hum attitude, the lack of push-back was not then described as a sign of Putin support. It appears, though, to be a different take now when Russia invaded Ukraine. Instead of seeing the conflict as more of a border dispute, somewhat like Crimea, the U.S. is throwing it’s full support to bringing Russia to it’s knees – giving Ukraine sophisticated armaments, transferring unending amounts of money directly into their accounts, sending military personnel and even border patrol over to assist them – while the Europeans have all but shut off their support.
Hypocritically, the question about our own border invasion is absent in conversations by people like Steve – the month of November being assessed as having a half million illegal crossings alone! The pleas for help along the southern border are met with stoney silence by the press and the Biden Administration, as Congress personally transports Zelensky over here to beg for more money, greets him with a standing ovation, and displays the Ukrainian flag in it’s chamber – honoring a man from one of the world’s most corrupt countries, as we ignore the plight of our own people having to deal with the millions of 3rd world people being illegally dispersed across the country.
It makes me wonder if we have become a self-hating country, where we would rather meddle in overseas affairs, poke and taunt a nuclear country like Russia by our overt zeal to aid and abet Ukraine’s adversarial war with them, then address our own problems here, state-side. And, for anyone questioning the reasoning behind the slobbering over Zelensky, as we turn our backs on our own people, labeling such dissident opinions as “Putin supporters,†it only exemplifies the myopia and muddled-mindedness of the average Zelensky acolyte.
