What Is Justice?

There are articles in both the Chicago Tribune and the Sun-Times about the individual who was shot and killed by ICE officers after he struck and injured another ICE officer as he tried to evade arrest. Leah Hope reports at ABC 7 Chicago.

There have since been demonstrations in Franklin Park “demanding justice”.

My question is what is justice in this case?

My understanding is that vehicular assault against a federal law enforcement officer who is in the course of his duty while trying to evade arrest is a severely aggravated felony.

If ti were the regular police it would probably be a legit shooting. However, if it was ICE in masks and not showing ID then it’s not so clear. We have had at least 2 reported instance sin our area of people pretending to be ICE robbing people. I dont know what the numbers are nationally of these incidents but they are happening so I dont think its beyond the pale that people might try to get away from or put other resistance against unidentified people claiming to be ICE agents.

  • My understanding of the law is that whether or not the driver of the car knew that the individual he struck with his car was a law enforcement officer is irrelevant.

My point in this post is just what I asked in my question: in this instance what is justice? Do the protesters want justice or do they want something else?

So if someone tries to break into your car and kidnap you, you try to escape but their sleeve gets caught in the door, you are legally obligated to stop and let them get free? IANAL but that sounds dubious. Anyway, someone could commit journalism and go ask the protestors. If it were me I would be asking that the ICE people be required to wear ID like regular police. If they dont then they (ICE) should be held accountable for any harms that occur.
