What’s Behind It All?

As my wife says, I do like a good turn of phrase. I’m not usually enthralled by Maureen Dowd’s New York Times column but her most recent one opens with an amusing one. In its very first sentence, right below a photo of Rudy Giuliani and Donald Trump standing side by side, she refers to “America’s Mayor and America’s Nightmare”. The balance of the column is about the media’s guilty pleasure in bickering with Trump and I didn’t find it particularly insightful.

There is one thought I’d like to share about the president and that only because I haven’t seen it mentioned elsewhere. Some of the continuing parade of what 25 years ago were called “bimbo eruptions” which I presume will continue as long as Donald Trump is president is because sex sells, some is because journalists hate Trump if for no other reason than because he’s not Hillary Clinton, and some is because Trump pushes back.

What do you think are the odds that all of the payoffs, secrecy, and so on regarding Trump’s affairs is not about embarrassment or political calculation but about cold, hard cash? Man, I’d love to see Melania’s prenup. I wonder if it has a “fidelity clause”?

    Zero. Nada. Zilch. Nil.

“U.S. President-elect Donald Trump pumped a total of $66 million of his own money into his campaign – “.

Any suggestion that Trump is in this to make money is ludicrous on its face. On the other hand (put on economist cap with hands 7 and 9) Stormy Daniels 24/7 is all about peddling snake oil.

Zero chance. Melania was a second rate model. She wasn’t in any position to make that demand.

To suggest that Trump and FAMILY were not interested in his presidency as a money making opportunity is ludicrous.

Hmm, Roy and Steve are both very confident but they can’t both be right. But maybe they’re half-right.

Since I don’t know what’s in Trump’s head, I can only guess – I think it’s mostly about power and ego, both of which are inextricably linked to money in our culture.
