And my spam problems have vanished as mysteriously as they appeared. Things seem to have returned to normal and, after a considerable amount of housecleaning that I wouldn’t wish on anybody without technological smarts, I’ve cleaned the leftovers out, hopefully without deleting any genuine comments.
I don’t know whether the various technical support requests I made (on none of which I received any responses) had some effect or whether the problems just disappeared.
As you may or may not know there was a Great Disturbance in the Force yesterday. Chinese servers experienced their worst ever DDoS attack (if you want me to explain that I’d be happy to). I think there was a lot more going on than that. Practically all of the spam I was getting originated in China.
I saw that about China. Wonder who launched it? DDoS attacks don’t strike as something a government would do — unless it was cover for something else…
I meant, a government other than the Chinese, of course.
Cyber-attacks are the most asymmetric form of warfare that there can be. Just one individual can attack the entire world with very little prospect of detection and the possibility of great effect.
The internet is unhappy about Chinese censorship, so if this isn’t a government I’d look to the Anonymous and LulzSec folks.
I’m actually surprised that Google and Cisco haven’t received more grief about their abetting Chinese repression.
Here’s food for thought: if Google is opening a back door to the NSA, are they doing the same for other nations? If not, why not?
