At MSNBC Zeeshan Aleem argues that the disaster unfolding in Ukraine could have been avoided:
The prevailing wisdom in the West is that Russian President Vladimir Putin was never interested in President Joe Biden’s diplomatic efforts to avert an invasion of Ukraine. Bent on restoring the might of the Soviet empire, this narrative goes, the Russian autocrat audaciously invaded Ukraine to fulfill a revanchist desire for some combination of land, power and glory.
But is that a complete explanation of what happened? He argues maybe not:
But the abundance of evidence that NATO was a sustained source of anxiety for Moscow raises the question of whether the United States’ strategic posture was not just imprudent but negligent.
The fact that the NATO status question was not put on the table as Putin signaled that he was serious about an invasion — so plainly that the U.S. government was spelling it out with day-by-day updates — was an error, and potentially a catastrophic one. It may sound cruel to suggest that Ukraine could be barred, either temporarily or permanently, from entering a military alliance it wants to be in. But what’s more cruel is that Ukrainians might be paying with their lives for the United States’ reckless flirtation with Ukraine as a future NATO member without ever committing to its defense.
Analysts say it’s widely known that Ukraine had no prospect of entering NATO for many years, possibly decades, because of its need for major democracy and anti-corruption reforms and because NATO has no interest in going to war with Russia over Ukraine’s Donbas region, where Russia has meddled and backed armed conflict for years. But by dangling the possibility of Ukraine’s NATO membership for years but never fulfilling it, NATO created a scenario that emboldened Ukraine to act tough and buck Russia — without any intention of directly defending Ukraine with its firepower if Moscow decided Ukraine had gone too far.
There’s no question that the Russians and Russian President Putin in particular are the immediate causes of the war. Russia invaded Ukraine without having been attacked by Ukraine. But has American fecklessness been a contributing factor? In particular was the announcement in 2008 that Georgia and Ukraine would become members of NATO prudent? Under the circumstances was it moral?
Could Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have been avoided? No. It is the result of stupidity and arrogance and fear, especially American stupidity and arrogance, and Russian fear. For the same reasons, WW I could not have been avoided. In fact, it was almost begun several years earlier during the Moroccan and Balkan crises. WW I was baked into the European cake.
You should notice that the US is now going down the same road with Sweden and Finland. Russia has already threatened both countries. An invasion of Finland is likely.
Mearsheimer argued in 1993 that Ukraine should not give up its nukes or should be encouraged to quickly fashion its own nuclear deterrent. Given the historic hostile relationship btw/ Russia and Ukraine, he argued this was the only means of preserving peace. Unless one takes a liberal IR view of the Ukraine situation, war was inevitable, and not encouraging nuclear proliferation to “great powers” or otherwise extending nuclear deterrence to Ukraine lead to war.
Ukraine was dangled a NATO carrot, and then effectively given nothing but ready to eat meals. Putin was never going to go for this.
It was not our war to fight, and still isn’t, but they could have been sold arms so they could fight their own war. Could that have staved off the current situation? We will never know.
Let’s not kid ourselves, Ukraine is a corrupt country. They are not angels as currently portrayed. But then wrt Ukraine, neither are we. See:

Is it immoral to dangle that carrot without backup? I think so.
I like to ask, WWReaganD?

Arguments supporting a Russian invasion of Finland:
– Finland was at one point part of the Russian empire
– It has a Russophone population
– Among that population about 12% report having been subjected to ethnic/racist discrimination of one sort or another
Arguments against a Russian invasion of Finland:
– the Russophone population is tiny–about 1% of the country
– that means that those reporting discrimination are about .1% of the country–you can probably find .1% of any country who will claim practically anything
– Finland was never as much a part of Russia as Ukraine was
– the Finns have a history of successful resistance to the Russians
Note that is not a defense. I am simply pointing out the objective situation. On balance I don’t think the Russians will invade Finland but I was wrong about Ukraine so who knows?
It is Ukraine that has been asking to join NATO. In September Zelensky cane here to talk about joining NATO and what Biden actually said was that we supported there sovereignty. We also make it clear, and the Ukrainans knew since they reported it, that we could not unilaterally admit them and that they had steps to take before they could even be considered for NATO. Ukraine was no closer to joining NATO than they were in 2008.
So things really had not changed since they asked to join back in 2008. So why does Ukraine keep asking to join NATO? Are they unaware that Russia is on their border? Did they want to be invaded? I think its pretty clear this is about the economics. Ukraine was joining Eu rather than Russian grid this year. They had seen other countries that left the Russia sphere do better economically and wanted closer economic ties to the rest of the world.
Ukraine might have been able to avoid being invaded but to do that they needed to remain Russia’s economic vassal. Then there is no talk of NATO. Of course then Ukraine might as well be part of the USSR. Instead they sought protection with NATO and went ahead and worked on improving their economy.

Russia did not object to Ukraine in the EU. They specifically objected to NATO. This war is about military security, not economics. Which is why the US policy in Sweden and Finland pushes Russia to an expanded war.
By the way, the US is green-lighting the transfer of Polish aircraft to Ukraine. This makes Poland a belligerent, and the possibility of a NATO vs Russian war is getting near a certainty.
I repeat. WW I was caused by stupidity, arrogance, and fear. We are staring at WW III for the same reasons. If you live in a major city (CHICAGO, Dave !!!) get out. The Upper Peninsula is crappy right now, but it preferable to any major city, which might soon be radioactive.
Ukraine knew, so did Putin, that we were nowhere close to accepting Ukraine into NATO. The economic ties were already starting. Ukraine has been asking to join NATO for 15 years and nothing happened. Start having closer economic ties to other countries and Russia invaded. It’s why Ukraine kept asking to join NATO.
