WALL-E

Yesterday at the urging of a number of our friend my wife and I watched WALL-E. We found it entertaining and well-made but I honestly don’t think it was half the picture that Up is.

My main reactions as I watched it were a) Chaplin and b) Modern Times. As it turns out this may not have been far off the mark: according to the trivia on the picture at IMDb the writer/director and crew watched Chaplin and Keaton pictures voraciously during the making of the picture.

So, bottom line I liked it, I’m glad I watched it, I think it was worth watching. Up is a much better cartoon and a much better film.

I liked both, but I really appreciated Up’s sensitive, dignified handling of a childless marriage. In fact, as a non-parenting wife I found so much of Up’s portrayal so “on the money” that I spent much of the film fighting back tears.

I’m grateful to whomever decided that this type of marriage deserves just as much respect as the traditional family unit.

My wife took the kids to see Up! a few weeks ago. I haven’t seen it. My wife cried a few times. I get the sense that this movie passed through my 5 & 7 year olds. Is this a children’s movie?

I liked the first half of Wall-E, which struck me as pretty high art in telling a story without words. But the second half seemed to fall into a more typical chase story and was a little preachy.

Pixar and Miyazaki have dominated animation for the last dozen years or so.

I think the 3D version is probably more entertaining to young kids. We saw the-“flat”?- version but I can imagine that watching the big house sail up into the sky and so forth would be very absorbing in 3D. And the action sequences would probably be more thrilling, too.

WALL-E easily beats Up in every way. Up is good, but it fails so much in the final portions with the flying dogs and stupid comedy bits that it irreparably damages the film. In contrast to the truly lame “the second half is bad” critiques of WALL-E, which then go on to mention how brilliant they found the spacewalk, credits, etc. WALL-E is art, Up was a pretty good Pixar film. Big difference.
