Today is the 90th anniversary of the release of Charlie Chaplin’s famous movie, The Tramp. It wasn’t Chaplin’s first appearance as The Little Tramp (that was in Kid Auto Races in 1914) but this was the appearance that cemented Chaplin in the public consciousness and made The Little Tramp a star. This picture didn’t have a lot of the later touches that we remember Chaplin for and, frankly, I don’t find it particularly funny. But there is a poignancy to the end of the picture as his signature character waddles off, completely alone. Essanay Pictures was originally a Chicago company by the way. They filmed their Westerns on the prairies of Rogers Park and also at scenic Starved Rock. They were also the first film company to set up shop in California. |
