The shooting spree which has been going on for the last several weeks in Chicago continues. The Chicago Sun-Times reports:
Five people were killed and nine more were wounded Thursday in shootings across Chicago.
A 16-year-old boy was killed Thursday morning in Ashburn on the Southwest Side by a man who said he was firing back at another shooter.
The boy was a passenger in a vehicle when someone shot him in the head about 10:35 a.m. in the 3900 block of West 83rd Street, Chicago police said. A female driver took him to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died.
The shootings are primarily taking place in a handful of neighborhoods (Garfield Park, Austin, Englewood, Humboldt Park) on the South and West Sides of Chicago. Thursday’s death toll follows a Wednesday in which nine people were shot, three fatally, mostly in the same neighborhoods.
I don’t know whether it’s boredom, the release of prisoners from Cook County, or not letting a crisis go to waste but Chicago is on track to near the high body count in 2017 after two years of declines.
Stop the euphemisms. We are talking black-on-black crime. And the cause is black genetics. You get the same problems in Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, wherever there are large numbers of blacks.
No, it isn’t. If it were the urban homicide rate per 100K population and the rural homicide rate per 100K population would be about the same. But they aren’t. Instead the rural black homicide rate is pretty close to the rural white homicide rate.
I think the reason is social dysfunction in urban black communities and those are partially the product of racism and partially the product of bad policies.
I think it’s ignorance. If you haven’t talked to these kids you can’t know. how many can’t even read. Can’t imagine a different life, yet too proud to admit it. Story from the “first 48” cop reality show:
A 20 year old black man is arrested for burglary and handgun murder of an 80 Y.O. man in his home. Police have lots of evidence, he confessed to two people, but in the interrogation room they want him to tell the story.
He clams up. But then the police try to loosen him by mentioning the wife of 50 years, she was there, she needs closure.
At this the young man brightens up and asks, “The wife, can she just drop the whole thing if she wants?”
Ig-no-rance.
My mom spent the entirety of her lengthy teaching career teaching the poorest of poor kids in St. Louis. In the 1940s those kids were white. By the 1970s they were black. She was aware that many of her students ended up in jail.
She said that they weren’t aware of enough of the possibilities and thought that the possibilities that were open to them were extremely limited and many involved illegal activities. My phrasing not hers.
One of my favorite sayings is “you don’t know what you don’t know”.
Seems obvious. But no. In an earlier post you mentioned private high schools.
No one that I was acquainted with in my youth knew such places existed or where one might be found. Let alone how to get in.
I do believe you’d be surprised at the level of ignorance of urban youth, their pride makes them hide what they don’t know. Mostly everything.
Besides, a handgun gives them all the respect and powerful pride they want.
