The Editors’ Take

I thought you might be interested in the editors’ of the Wall Street Journal’s take on the January 6 committee’s hearings:

The House inquiry into the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot launched its TV miniseries Thursday night, and the trick for parsing the proceedings is to keep two ideas in tension. Do Democrats want to unfairly besmirch the entire GOP with the Jan. 6 disgrace, while distracting voters from 8.6% inflation and $5-a-gallon gasoline? Yes.

Yet did the committee offer a damning look at President Trump’s scheme to stay in office after losing the 2020 election? Also yes. Fresh video of the riot is a reminder that Jan. 6 was a brutal melee of fists and chemical sprays. “I was slipping in people’s blood,” said Capitol Police Officer Caroline Edwards. The footage is visceral, even if similar scenes were already on YouTube.

They go on to describe how the committee strengthens its case by citing testimony from Mark Milley and William Barr but weakens it by quoting unnamed sources.

They conclude by observing that Donald Trump has served his supporters poorly:

The person who owns Jan. 6 is Donald Trump. Remarkably, he seems to welcome this. “January 6th was not simply a protest,” he wrote Thursday on Truth Social, “it represented the greatest movement in the history of our Country to Make America Great Again.”

Pity the people who went to Washington believing this nonsense, not least the more than 800 who have been charged with criminal offenses. Thursday’s hearing ended with video of rioters explaining their thinking, as their criminal charges flashed on the screen. “I did believe that the election was being stolen,” one man said, “and Trump asked us to come.”

Mr. Trump betrayed his supporters by conning them on Jan. 6, and he is still doing it.

As I see it the hearings serve a number of purposes including:

  • An analysis of the facts surrounding the events of January 6
  • Hatred of Donald Trump
  • Battlespace preparation

in declining order of probity. I also think that the committee members are misinterpreting their role as prosecutors constructing a case for the criminal prosecution of the former president. To whatever extent that is the case they are wasting energies that would be better devoted to ascertaining the facts with an eye fostering confidence in our government and politics, intent on preventing a recurrence of the events of that day.

    Ended with a video?
    Michael Moore maybe?
    Just the facts would suffice,
edited video with coerced confessions isn’t even intended to be healing. It’s a warning to people who oppose Progressive
    agendas.
After four years of hearings and testimony by Democrats in congress and Obama era loyalists then parroted 24/7 by liberal media why wouldn’t supporters of the President suspect another unscrupulous attempt to remove him from office?
    It fit the whole pattern.
And half of the country still doesn’t buy it.
    20 million tuned in.
    340million didn’t.

We’ve entered Third World country where political differences are criminalized. How long before we get an actual coup d’état here?

Of course, a lot of our cities do look like Third World right now. Maybe the coup has already happened.

    PS. Didn’t watch and won’t.

They have plenty of plain un-edited video. There was plenty of violence. Were there also police who were afraid to resist the crowds and just let them walk in? Yes. Should we be surprised when there are police who wont take a risk when 4th graders are being shot over the course of an hour? No.

Dont know if you saw the Atlantic piece but if I understood it correctly, IANAL, it looks like Trump’s knew a couple things. First, they really did lose. Second, if they could delay the certifying of the electors at the state level past the certification date then the designated electors could be challenged. That appears to be a not well thought out artifact of the Electoral College system and should be fixed.

These J6 hearings are nothing more than an orchestrated travesty. Much like the Russian Collusion fabrication, the Mueller investigation joke, and now the current “insurrection” hearings —- where the only people carrying arms were the DC Police, the only people killed were protesters, and the real violence was committed by the DC Police who shot rubber bullets through people’s cheeks, clubbed a woman to death, tossed flash grenades and generously tear gassed crowds —— the primary goal of all three productions has been to carry out a successful character assassination of Trump.

Like Gray noted, the hearings did not attract a massive audience for this carefully crafted piece of political theatre. Nonetheless this illegitimately constructed committee is kept alive by their media cohorts, whose criticism or investigative skills are mainly primed and exercised when the subject matter involves a Republican. — better yet if it’s Trump himself. Basically, Just like half of Joe Biden’s Twitter account is fake, so are the so-called “facts” surrounding the origination of the J6 fractious event, like who were the primary actors calling for breaching the Capitol, or what were the real reasons behind creating a riot that would certainly crush any ability to present state by state examples of fraudulent election activity?

When is a riot not a riot?
When it is a suspected intent to riot, this can be differentiated from protest by skin color and patriotic warning signs, such as American,(as opposed to rainbow colored) flags.

” it looks like Trump’s knew a couple things. First, they really did lose. Second, if they could delay the certifying of the electors at the state level past the certification date then the designated electors could be challenged.”

Yes, Trump was aware of a few things. First he knew that any large crowd was culpable of getting out of hand, especially after having been through the over 250 Antifa riots, the summer before. This is why he requested at least 10,000 National Guard be present on January 6th. The big question, though, that anti-trumpers fail to ask, is why was this reasonable request turned down by Speaker Pelosi and the DC mayor? Why, when the head of the DC police also asked, multiple times on January 6th, for backup and extra help, was he too ignored? There is even a video of protesters approaching heavily armed police, standing by doing nothing, who asked, even pleaded with them, for more police reinforcements. Again, all these various requests were solidly ignored by the very people who are now making bellicose statements about the conduct of these election protesters, when the real reason chaos happened was the lack of security available to curtail the relatively few skirmishes that happened early on.

Furthermore, criticism of an electoral process, allowing people to question irregularities of an election, mandating the saving of ballots and election material for 22 months, seems to support quickie elections rather than ones demonstrating an abundance of caution so “election integrity” can be maintained. To whitewash the 2020 election as a “perfect one,” one where court cases were dismissed solely on lack of standing rather than a serious review of the evidence, only produces more doubt and governmental distrust. Even currently, when the CISA report was finally released, confirming at least 9 security flaws in the dominion machines that could alter votes, there is only a disinterested hum among those continuing to discredit anyone questioning the outcome of the past presidential election. When you add up this new revelation to all the other problems cited in thousands of citizen affidavits, laws arbitrarily changed in swing states weeks before the election, Zuckerberg’s enormous one-sided infusion of monies going primarily to democrat precincts, ballots being destroyed, and testimonies of ballots transported across state lines being shrugged off – and yet with straight faces the Dems continue to recite it was a perfectly good election – nothing to see here…move on.

“All 31 were charged with conspiracy to riot, a misdemeanor, White said. The men were going through the booking process Saturday afternoon and are scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, he said.

Based on evidence collected and documents, authorities found that the group was planning to riot in several areas of downtown, not just the park, White said.”

Fox somehow forgot to tell you that they had some documented evidence. KUTV noted that they got pulled over because a local noticed 20 or so people all dressed alike and wearing masks (people dont wear masks in Idaho) were all getting into the back of a U-Haul. Seems worth investigating.

How can any committee be considered fact-finding, unbiased and even relevant when it’s comprised of one-sided “haters” who have their minds cemented in a unified, fixed position? How can truth be exposed when there’s no cross examination allowed from the “defendants,” countering the charges being unilaterally made? Isn’t that the very definition of a Kangaroo Court, or worse yet a “Star Chamber,” where the outcome is orchestrated early on, rather than presented and proven from a myriad of angles? Why aren’t emails and communications from Pelosi, who was in charge of the safety measures in the Capitol, subject to public review, while every Republican and their mothers are being subpoenaed in mass. Why aren’t the Capitol videos, in their entirety, being made available for all to see and judge, rather than the edited hand-picked ones, provided by a democrat-run panel? Why are the deaths of 5 protesters either glossed over or ignored? Why are so many protesters, most with no criminal records, family men, small business owners, decorated vets, being held without bail, due process, and in solitary confinement – often confined for over a year’s time?

There are so many aspects of this J6 event that seem to mirror Gastapol-like tactics, with harsh treatment, vile prison conditions given to those considered “adversaries.” Yet, this is the United States, “ home of the free and the brave?
