The senior senator from Illinois has apologized for his statement last week that effectively equated the treatment of detainees in Guantanamo to the worst atrocities our species has produced to date. Few doubt that its a lukewarm apology but I’m with Dean and Rusty on this one: take it at face value, accept it, and move on.
Shouldn’t we expect better rhetoric from a U.S. Senator than to compare U.S. military personnel at GITMO to Nazis and Soviet muderers? Maybe in the future we should simply assume that Dick Durbin is lying bastard and move on.
Hardly an apology!
Senator Durbin delivered a prepared speech. In it he referenced a specific instance and then compared our military to Nazis, and the Gitmo facility to a Soviet Gulag. It’s no coincidence that “gulag” is the same term used by Amnesty International. Calling this Administration “Nazis” is the favorite rhetoric of groups like MoveOn.org. He was clearly pandering to the anti-war, anti-Bush segment. His remarks played directly into the hands of our enemies.
I call people like Senator Durbin, “Americas New 5th Column”. The American People need to understand how irresponsible his tactics are. I want him to release the FBI email he quoted so everyone can see the entire context of the report. I don’t believe the memo wil justify his characterization. I have written an online petition to demand he release his references. You can support the effort at:

Help me hold Senator Durbin accountable.
