The Anti-Incumbent Election

I continue to believe that the November elections will hinge on turnout and that in the present mood of the electorate practically anything can happen. I stumbled across this account of a meeting of Rep. Luis Gutiérrez, who represents the Illinois 4th District (highly gerrymandered to concentrate Hispanic votes into a single district) at Hoy Chicago:

Justo en el momento que Gutiérrez llegó, se acercó un grupo de manifestantes que portaban carteles que decían: “Cállate chachalaca”, “Cárdenas HDO”, “Latinos United”, “El pueblo vendido será vencido”, entre otros, y se plantaron frente al lugar donde se realizaría el anuncio de apoyo a Mah.

My Spanish isn’t as good as it might be but I don’t think that the group of demonstrators is very happy with Rep. Gutiérrez. IIRC “chachalaca” is a slang expression for a blowhard.

This is the part that I found interesting:

Acto seguido, Gutiérrez se alejó mientras era seguido por el grupo que lo abucheaba, Gutiérrez dijo temer por su vida.

which I interpret as Rep. Gutiérrez saying that he was in fear for his life. Maybe he was exaggerating. The last time I recall a Chicago Congressional representative being afraid of injury at the hands of his constituents was Dan Rostenkowski.
