Sphere of Influence

Over the past more than 200 years the United States has invaded the following countries, in some cases occupying them or annexing portions of them outright:

Bolivia
Cuba (multiple times)
Dominican Republic (multiple times)
Grenada
Haiti (multiple times)
Mexico (multiple times)
Nicaragua
Paraguay
Panama

That doesn’t include some CIA interventions or meddling in the elections of our neighbors. Draw your own conclusions over whether the U. S. believes that the countries of the Western Hemisphere are within its sphere of influence.

The US is not warlike at all so I think your list is probably wrong.

Dave is perfectly capable of arguing his point, steve. But I think you are misrepresenting.

American politicians, State, the CIA…….are interested in meddling. But the people, to Dave’s point, are relatively disinterested or simply reflexively support the troops.

I doubt the American people, six months ago, were chomping at the bit to get involved in any way in Ukraine. Bet after the invasion US progressive dominated media has made it a huge cause. A morality play. Ukraine: heroic. Russia: scoundrels. And that’s how you get support for wars. But it did not arise organically out of a population’s inherently warlike mindset.

At best you can say people just blindly support the troops, except it goes beyond that. There is also public shaming of those who oppose our wars. We certainly saw that in our recent wars, or even the absence of any protests. Look back at the old interviews after the Kent State shootings with the locals. Pretty uniformly the opinion was that the kids deserved to be shot for opposing the war.

Also, this supporting the troops thing is kind of a sore spot. It would be much better to support them by not sending them to get needlessly killed to begin with. Waving flags and singing “patriotic” songs doesnt do much for me.

On that we are in agreement and I wrote as much in my Memorial Day post. I attribute it to our insisting on electing weak and cowardly blowhards as leaders.

Weak, cowardly and often not very competent, but they dont seem to have any trouble convincing us to go invade or bam someone. I didnt even include Yemen in my list or other places where we are deployed or have droned people. Is it more likely that is the one time they become good leaders and can convince people to do what they want or that Americans just lean that way to begin with?

And all REAL Americans LOVE to fight!

No, they love to send others to fight and wave flags and talk about how patriotic they are.
