Those of you who’ve been reading The Glittering Eye since the beginning may remember the trouble we had with Tally and babby bunnies last year. It’s happened again.
My wife, rising at 5:00am as usual, woke me up at 5:30am with the news that Tally, our huntress, had located a nest of baby bunnies and had killed one of them. My job was to dispose of the body. I rose, dressed, did the disposal job, and hunted for the nest. Try as I might I couldn’t find it.
After her breakfast I let Tally out into the backyard to perform her post-prandial ablutions. Meanwhile I wrangled the other dogs. I heard a commotion in the backyard and saw Tally with a dead baby bunny in her mouth. She released it on command (she’s a very good girl) and I sent her into the house. I followed the trail of dead baby bunnies to a nest that was buried behind our compost heap. It had been completely covered and invisible when I checked there this morning. Noting that one of Tally’s victims still showed signs of life I picked the poor thing up (rubber gloves and plastic bag to leave as little human scent on it as I could) and put him back by the nest. There was at least one more safe baby in the nest. Perhaps the doe will move the nest like last year. Until then I need to keep the dogs from the backyard. So it will be frequent walks all day. Fortunately the weather is glorious.
