Something for Everyone

As I read the comments at this post at OTB on the revelation that the sale of the gun used to murder nine members of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, was only allowed by a goof on the part of the FBI, it occurred to me that the terrible occurrence really has something for everyone.

If you think the murders were the result of an environment of hate fomented by the Confederate Battle Flag, you’ll want to ban the Confederate Battle Flag. If you think that the murders were the result of guns, you’ll want more stringent laws against guns. If you think that the murders were the the actions of a crazed, drugged-out kid, you might want stricter controls on schedule drugs. If you think that the murders were a result of an FBI run amok, you might think that the FBI needs to be reined in. I’ve even seen claims that the murders would never have occurred if the victims had been armed themselves.

As I said, there’s something for everyone.

The Confederate Battle Flag apparently being the most disposable of idols. I cannot help but get sucked-into what is a fairly unimportant symbolic argument that interests me; I’m not sure what more important people’s excuses are. We seem to have a lot of symbolic arguments in this country.
