Shopping spree

I am not a graceful shopper. I don’t like shopping. I don’t go shopping. When I do shop I run in, grab what I want, pay for it, and leave.

Last night my wife and I went to Toms-Price and bought a small Stickley folding table. That’s it over there at the left. Ours will be made of cherry and have what they call their Madison finish, a medium tone
“distressed” finish with a wax lacquer.

I’m somewhat particular about our furniture. Much of what we’ve got I’ve had for twenty-five years or more. Our dining room table is a walnut trestle-style table with a parquet top that I had made for me by an artisan in Minneapolis. Our dining room chairs are large, square walnut chairs with natural rush seats (some of which could use a little help at this point). Another chap in Minneapolis made the chairs for me.

On one wall in our dining room is a gorgeous Amish glass-front stepback cupboard I bought in Iowa. In the opposite corner of the dining room is a huge Kentucky walnut corner cupboard. I’ll tell you the story of how I happened to buy that one some time.

Over the last couple of years my wife and I have bought a number of Mission-style pieces for the living room—a hideabed sofa and an armchair. The new table should fit right in as a side table for the armchair and, if we want to open it up, as a small table in front of the fireplace for tea or games.

We spent about a half hour looking through the store, considering alternative finishes for the table (my wife had already select the piece she wanted from their catalog), and chatting with the salesman. We put a deposit down then I dashed for the exit.
