Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel takes to the pages of the Wall Street Journal with an op-ed warning them that Democrats’ objective should be defeating President Donald Trump in November rather than tearing the Democratic Party apart:
Reform is often more effective than revolution. Amid the heated rhetoric now blowing through Iowa, Democrats appear to be losing sight of that. Progressivism isn’t a destination—it’s an orientation. Purists are anxious to box some of us out by narrowing the definition, but we all share in the mission of using government’s tools to serve those who have been left behind. The next nine months will present our raucous coalition a rare opportunity to establish a new Democratic “metropolitan majority†that could last for years. We can’t afford to let internecine disagreements about how to reach our common goals get in the way.
Let’s pause right there. I think his head is right but his heart is wrong. Is it really true that “we all share in the mission of using government’s tools to serve those who have been left behind”? Or is Mayor Emanuel engaging in a bout of nostalgia?
He continues:
In recent months both Presidents Clinton and Obama have come under withering criticism—not from conservatives but from Democrats arguing they were insufficiently progressive while in office. Set aside the unforced error of attacking fellow Democrats at a moment when retiring Donald Trump ought to be our singular goal. The underlying critique fundamentally misunderstands how we should judge any given leader’s stewardship of our agenda.
He apparently has not been paying attention as one former Democratic mainstay after another has been “cancelled”, as they call it, for grave infractions of the still unwritten code. The best way of gauging the discontent is by the results. The technocrats and the connected are getting rich; the left behind are still left behind.
Here’s his head talking:
Regardless, the coming campaign is bound to be difficult. In the past century, only four presidents lost bids for re-election. Herbert Hoover, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush were all burdened by recession. Mr. Trump’s consistently low job approval suggests he is uniquely vulnerable. But with unemployment hovering near record lows, the Democratic nominee will need both substance and style that contrast well with Mr. Trump’s conflict and chaos.
and here’s his heart:
The country appears poised for the sort of political realignment Messrs. Clinton and Obama could only dream about. Many suburban women, for instance, regret empowering a president who ended up tearing children from their parents at the border. But to establish a metropolitan majority, progressives need to seize the opportunity with the right candidate and the right approach.
Right now it all seems to come back to the Dirty Harry question: “Feel lucky, punk?”
I think that Mayor Emanuel is kidding himself. As I said in the previous post, this time really is different. Today’s reformers are of a different stamp than those of 10 or 20 or 30 years ago. They won’t settle for gradualism. They want to overturn the whole system now.
Trump’s people wanted to build a wall and have Mexico pay for it. Didnt happen. I think the radicals dominate social media more than they did 10 years ago, but once in office you cant put much of the radical stuff into law. One of the reasons Trump really hasn’t accomplished very much. I would expect the same if the Dems win. (The rhetoric will be much more radical.)

Dem’s “using government tools to help those left behind” is a canard and a joke. Many people are heavily taxed to support the gummint mis-education of the offspring of the breeders, who enjoy gummint largess regardless of wealth or poverty. Same with SS and Medicare.
It would be more accurate to say that dem’s don’t ever mind using Other People’s Money to help those they deem deserving on account of their color, marital and breeding status, acceptance of union dominance and the like. They love picking the winners and losers in life, which means that the best and the brightest in a dem-run society won’t necessarily rise to to he top. No Gates, Zuckerberg, Jobs or Wozniak, Bezos or Musk — only those who choose to breed and gain from socialist policies.
Dave, please don’t call them reformers. They want to burn the MFer down (after confiscating all the money first, of course), and then build the ‘perfect’ society on the ashes and the charred bones of their victims. Which will include pretty much everybody who posts here.
Rahm Emmanuel, Mr. Don’t let a crisis go to waste (even if you have to manufacture one) is the last person who should go around talking about the ‘noble’ purpose of government. The purpose of power is power, Orwell said it best. It’s the rare breed of politician (if they even exist) who’s in it to serve the people. The Founding Fathers, many of whom were experienced politicians, knew that and set up our government to have competing sources of power which would check each other. The French philosophes believed Man could be perfected and Europe paid the price with twenty years of bloody war. The Socialists and Communists still believe in the fallacy of perfectibility. I’m still waiting to be served that omelette too.
The Democrats will take another impeachment run at Trump, because it’s all they have left. Bernie if he lives will probably be the Democratic candidate for President despite the DNC’s best efforts. A second attempt to cheat him out of the nomination will make Milwaukee burn win or lose. We will are going to have a repeat of the the 2019 British election this year, an oafish boor versus a hard-boiled jew-hating communist. It didn’t work out for Corbyn and it will work out even less for Sanders because Boris is actually much closer to Corbyn’s political positions than Trump is to Sanders. If Sanders is cheated again, the Democratic party could split because its Communist/Socialist wing isn’t going to vote for the DNC’s choice.
IMO AOC will run for President in 2024, and when she loses, there will be more blood in the streets.
“Right now it all seems to come back to the Dirty Harry question: “Feel lucky, punk?â€
Politics has been so divisive, conflicted and overwhelming lately that there’s been little to laugh about. But, I did laugh after reading the Dirty Harry’s line Dave posted. Thanks for the ray of lightheartedness!
I have to wonder if Rahm believes his own bull, or if lip service is just price of admission to the party. If someone believes their lives are on hold until the right person is elected President, they will still be waiting the day they die.
Government programs are always chincy compared to what you can do for yourself. And reliance breeds indolence, then physical incapacity and apathy.
Spare us.
“…governments tool….left behind…â€
Spare me. Student loan forgiveness. Etc. tripe. Just tripe.
Bernie is being screwed by the establishment Dems again. Not my problem but anyone who thinks the DNC, Nance, Chuckie etc have a moral fiber is delusional. I pray for them………..solemnly. But I’m outta pens.
I’m wondering, Dave, if you still believe the progressive whakos are still a small minority. Seems like it may be a greater proportion than you, or I, would hope.
“progressive whakos ”
Yes, observing body language, facial reactions, ect. of the fab four wouldn’t lead me to believe that any of them CARE about anyone but themselves. They clearly believe they’ve caught a wave that will propel them to political power, but if anyone hopes these gals CARE for others,

A Trump voter talking about moral fiber? comedy platinum

No White working class or middle class person has any business voting for a party that routinely demonizes them and that actively discriminates against them. However, many Whites think the Democrat Party is still the party of John Kennedy or even Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton. It isn’t. The Democrat Party hates Whites with a passion, unless, of course, they are billionaire Wall Street denizens.
Eventually, the elderly Whites who still think the Democrat Party is a middle class/working class party will die away, and we will have a full-blown identitarian set of parties.
Inquiring minds want to know.
What is the phrase “Who’s your daddy?â€
A. A boastful taunt at a sporting event.
B. A line from the 60s song Time of the Season.
C. The only question asked Hunter Biden at a job interview.
Good one, Drew!
Who are these Democrats who hate white people? Who are these Republicans who supposedly care about people?
