Reality show must improve to attract audience

“The 9/11 Commission” has yet to find its footing in the crowded reality show lineup and a lack of attention to the conventions of the genre may be one of the reasons. In fact, the program at times seems to resemble professional wrestling more closely. If that’s what the producers are going for, the performers are going to have to buff up quite a bit. Perhaps a guest appearance by the present governor of California or the former governor of Minnesota would help.

For “9/11 Commission” to attract an audience in the key 18 to 24 demographic as a reality show, the producers should return to the tried and true stereotypes this audience has come to expect.

For Bob Kerrey to satisfy the “Grizzled Veteran” role he should squint more and be crankier. Occasional colorful “service-y” expressions would be helpful.

By all means bring Condoleezza Rice back for a guest appearance but she will need to change her body language and demeanor to fill the highly popular “Sista with Attitude” role that audiences love so much.

Although suggested by some for the role, Richard Clarke is completely unacceptable for “Gay Guy”. He doesn’t have the style and he doesn’t have the cattiness. And where did they get this Richard Ben-Veniste guy? He should be voted off the island immediately.

Other required stereotypes are completely absent. Although Madeline Albright might have filled the “Bossy Older Woman” role that every reality show needs her appearance was far too brief to really develop in a way the audience would
find compelling. And where are “Lazy Hunk” and “Blond Babe”?

Unless “9/11 Commission” returns to its roots, this reality show will not come to a satisfying finale and its prospects for returning next season are low.
