While I’m on the subject here’re some of the occupations that have been practiced by my male ancestors.
| Relationship | Occupation |
|---|---|
| Father | Lawyer |
| Paternal grandfather | Saloon Owner |
| Maternal grandfather | Vaudeville entertainer |
| Paternal grandfather’s father | Milk broker/saloon owner/politician |
| Paternal grandmother’s father | Chiropractor |
| Maternal grandfather’s father | Engineer |
| Maternal grandmother’s father | Laborer |
In the generation earlier than that occupations included milk broker (the Schuler family business), engineer (we’re not entirely certain what was meant by the term), cooper (barrelmaker), and express rider/cowboy/cattle grader.
There were occupations other than the ubiquitous Keeping house among my female ancestors, too. In the maternal line: remedial reading teacher, vaudeville entertainer, cook.
To put this in a little perspective once you get prior to my dad you’re talking about 1900 or before. In the 1900 U. S. federal census 90% of the men listed their occupations as farmer and the overwhelming preponderance of women listed theirs as keeping house.
