Joe Katzman of Winds of Change points out that jinnderella, frequent commenter on WoC, has a blog of her own now: Hot Needles of Inquiry. Several of her posts involve mythic imagery especially as it relates to the War on Terror. Interesting, imaginative stuff.
This post, for example, relates the myth of Cupid and Psyche to the War on Terror. jinnderella, I think there’s another myth you should consider: the myth of Antaeus
Antaeus was invincible as long as he maintained contact with his mother, Gaia, the goddess of the earth.
The earth that we walk on is where our ancestors were buried. It’s the myths, legends, beliefs, and customs that they lived by and that have formed the basis of our society. Many people have said that we’re going to have to learn about the beliefs and customs of our enemies in order to defeat them. Maybe so. But I believe it’s even more important that we re-form our attachments to the foundations of our own culture for so long as we stay in contact with that foundation we will, indeed, be invincible.
Dave, I love it! You so understand me! 🙂
Why do we remember Gaia and Antaeus? Because it is IMPORTANT. We tell the same stories, and they don’t change. Our ties to the earth translate to love of country for me. The Left has forgotten.
The Hot Needle of Inquiry is the name of a spaceship from Larry Niven’s Ringworld cycle. It is also a torture device of the kzin, from the same books.
And I found you through the comments at WoC.
Of course I am already a fan of Jinnderella, whose articles are quite fascinating and unique in their
patterns of description and behaviour.
I expect delightful, rich and enthusiastic argumentive debates expounded on such websites.
It’s funny you should mention that. I’ve been thinking of doing a post on a theme from an early Niven Kzin story (maybe the first): that every tool is a weapon and its power is directly proportional to its usefulness as a tool. It’s occurred to me that the Internet is such a tool and, indeed, one of the most powerful.
Welcome, mshyde! Prowl around.
