You may have noticed that I haven’t remarked on the murders in Atlanta last week. I thought they were horrible but this is not a news blog and I saw it as local news. Since the major news outlets have decided it’s national news and moreover apparently for the wrong reasons, I’ll comment now. Andrew Sullivan declaims that the outlets have let their preferred narratives replace the news:
Accompanying one original piece on the known facts, the NYT ran nine — nine! — separate stories about the incident as part of the narrative that this was an anti-Asian hate crime, fueled by white supremacy and/or misogyny. Not to be outdone, the WaPo ran sixteen separate stories on the incident as an anti-Asian white supremacist hate crime. Sixteen! One story for the facts; sixteen stories on how critical race theory would interpret the event regardless of the facts. For good measure, one of their columnists denounced reporting of law enforcement’s version of events in the newspaper, because it distracted attention from the “real†motives. Today, the NYT ran yet another full-on critical theory piece disguised as news on how these murders are proof of structural racism and sexism — because some activists say they are.
Meanwhile at Reason.com Robby Soave documents just how the media got an important part of the story wrong:
A moment from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office press conference on Wednesday quickly went viral: Jay Baker, a spokesperson for the police department handling the investigation into the horrific Atlanta spa murders, said that suspect Robert Aaron Long was having a bad day.
“He was pretty much fed up, kind of at the end of his rope, and yesterday was a really bad day for him and this is what he did,” said Baker.
The comment struck many people as overly sympathetic toward Long, as if Baker was making excuses for someone who stands accused of killing eight Asian-American women in cold blood. A 20-second video clip of Baker’s statement was shared on Twitter by Vox journalist Aaron Rupar and swiftly went viral, earning widespread condemnation. Many saw it as evidence that cops are desperate to discount the culpability of white male criminals. For instance, Kimberlé Crenshaw, a law professor and inventor of the term “intersectionality,” described Baker’s comments as “bone-chilling,” and castigated him for refusing to acknowledge “the misogynistic dimensions of anti-Asian racism.”
A police officer excusing Long’s actions as merely the result of him having a “bad day” would indeed be contemptible. But that’s not what Baker did. In fact, many of the people so infuriated about the quote were misled by Rupar’s edit of the video.
and includes this important observation:
It would be naive of the police—or the public, or anyone else—to accept what alleged killers say at face value. It’s similarly naive to assume that the sex and ethnicity of the victims tells us everything we need to know about the crime.
to which I would add that it is equally naive to decide that the race and gender of the perpetrator tells you everything you need to know about the crime.
The narrative is that
- Any crime perpetrated by a white man against anyone other than another white man must be motivated by racism and/or sexism.
- Police officers are racists and sexists.
- Only whites are capable of racism. And presumably only men can be guilty of sexism.
From that narrative the stories practically write themselves.
When I first heard about the story my immediate reaction was that prostitution can be a dangerous business. I have been acquainted with prostitutes socially in my early childhood (we lived down the street from a brothel) and in my young adulthood. I thought they were sad. But I also part ways with some libertarians. I think that prostitution foments abuse and human trafficking. That was my second reaction on hearing the story. I was unaware that brothels with Chinese, presumably, prostitutes were so common in Atlanta and wondered how many of the girls who had been murdered had been working off their debts.
You know I resemble those remarks and besides the imagery brought by a white
Woman’s chilling bones, I’m struck by the many talking heads now referring to Chinese as POC, complicating Biden’s negotiations with the Han.
Reparations anyone?
Context matters, Hate crimes against Asians were up last year by about 150%. Yes, prostitutes get killed occasionally and it is an occupational hazard, but it is usually a single killing. Mass killings are rare. So in context with more hate crimes and mass killings of prostitutes as being rare, supposition that there might be a race component was not out of bounds. After there was more reporting continuing it was wrong except for the sexism part.
Know a lot of fundamentalist, evangelical churches (not just Christian ones either) women are portrayed as the temptresses. Men are not really entirely responsible for their desires. Sex education in those churches, my brother is a part time minister at one of these churches and it is what I grew up in, consists of the women being taught to not tempt men and to say no if asked for sex. Men are either taught to accept no as the answer or to not ask but accept no if that is the answer. Note that it is within those cultures that you have the purity celebrations for the daughters in the families, not usually the sons.
So their is likely a lot of sexism and misogyny built into the killings. It was his sin, his addiction, but he killed a bunch of women. It was their fault.
All of this with the caveat that the investigation is not done. Final details not revealed.
Steve
Another issue.
Biden had ordered flags at half staff nation wide.
When can they fly? Never?
A local story being taken national because of sex, murder, and a white perpetrator.
The media chases the bias of its readers and Biden rushes forward to lift up the bloody headline and posture.
I really hope he’s posturing.
If this is really where he thinks a President’s focus should be he’s dotty.
investigation is not done
Sure it is.
Settled by the mob just like the “police murder of George Floydâ€.
On to the show trial.
The “news†has not been a reflection of an unbiased explanation of events for some time now. Recently, a DC Circuit Court judge candidly warned the country about the overwhelming slant of stories, via print, cable and social media sites, all towards augmenting the democrat party narrative, helping them to retain power for forever – especially if they can slide HR-1 through. What a joke it is that Obama is attaching “Jim Crowism†to those opposing this viciously corrupt version of “voter integrity laws,†considering it was the dem party who was the architect of such laws in the first place.
Although it’s been only a measly 3 months since the dem regime change, the country is charging as fast as it can to discredit, dismantle, alienate rather than unite, any semblance of common sense policies or strategies that were in place prior to the questionably-run 2020 election. Consequently, in the place of almost daily press interactions with a president, we have had zero chances to rebut, confront this supposedly leader of America.
For instance:
The Capitol building has been militarized, locked down and under a National Guard presence wondering what they are doing there, considering there was no “armed†insurrection seen in the almost million people attending the election protest event.
The Border patrol is now under an unwritten Gag Order to not talk to reporters, who are also restricted from visiting migrant detention camps. This zone of silence mandated while the borders are being overrun with up to 4000 “catches†a day, overcrowding of detained children centers (kids sleeping on the floor without good running water), no social distancing, no COVID testing, releasing infected migrants into the country or shipping them to northern borders for processing – all the while the democrats narrative is “this is not a crisis.†Or, even more conveniently, “it’s Trump’s fault.â€
Then we have the China meeting in Alaska with our new (some people would say already compromised) SOS and Biden’s National Security Advisor. Afterwards Biden says he was proud of Blinkin, differing with most other people’s opinion that the Chinese humiliated and disrespected the US. As much as the past administration attempted to push back on China’s aggressive tactics, including shinning an unflattering light on the negative influence the Confusius institutes had in academic settings, all this is being dissolved in less than 3 months of EOs – coming with machine gun speed from the WH. The Confusius Institutes are now called “Asia Society Chinese Partner Networks†– ah, so benign! Reversed too are policies preventing China’s involvement with our power grid.
So, where is the press’s curiosity, their investigative tentacles looking into these reversals and other incongruent changes? I think this question was perfectly answered by one comment, posted anonymously:
“When a Republican is president, the press wants to be Woodward and Bernstein. When a democrat is president, the press wants to be Monica Lewinsky.â€
That about sums it up!
https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021/03/15/migrant-apprehensions-at-u-s-mexico-border-are-surging-again/
The numbers at the border are not nearly as bad as they were in 2019, but now this is big news. I dont really remember it being regarded as crisis in 2019, at least not by others who post on this blog. What we really see is pretty steady increase in illegal immigration since last April.
I see the conservatives have already convinced themselves we are now a communist, 3rd world country. And now we eat babies too!
Steve
Yes, those obviously Republican news outlets, the New York Times and the Washington Post are both complaining about it. Proof positive it’s a partisan plot!
Here’s an alternative explanation. The obvious spike in border crossings, particularly by unaccompanied children, since the election suggests that the Biden Administration’s stated policies have had unintended consequences and gotten beyond their control. Shorter: Biden screwed up.
Steve always entertains.
I’m not so sure he’s aware that poor Guatemalans have cell phones.
Dead serious.
Steve’s snarky, condescending comments used to touch a small nerve of defensiveness. Now, I just see his views as political blindness stuck in a cement footing. Even some strong minded dem friends of mind are seeing the hypocrisy, being generated every day, by the slim majority now governing under a lackluster, puppet presidency.
I can’t quite figure out the mobile phone utilization in Guatemala. Either a lot of people have more than one account, the number of people in Guatemala is underestimated, or there’s something else going on. There are more cellphone contracts in Guatemala than there are people in Guatemala.
Whatever it is most people there have mobile phones.
Criminals throw burner phones away every few days.
“Steve always entertains.”
No, Steve shows numbers. I get snark and stupidity fromDrew and jan, normal for them, and I get Dave ignoring the numbers and using the NYT to justify it. The facts remain that immigration numbers have increased steadily since April and they are not even close to what they were in 2019. It is so much easier to respond to a made up narrative.
If we take into account the actual numbers, just try it Dave, what we could say is that Biden might have added to an already growing problem. If you try hard you can convince yourself there is an inflection point in that rise. (Plus, I know that I will never hear from Dave, jan or Drew how Trump screwed up and we ended up with way higher numbers in 2019. So I will stick with the numbers and you guys make up stuff.)
Steve
I will gladly admit that Trump screwed up. He was always looking at the wrong ball in terms of immigration statistics. Here are the statistics:

The Pew article that graphic is from is captioned “Migrant apprehensions at U. S.-Mexico border are surging again”. I’m a bit skeptical that number of apprehensions is the right measure to be looking at. You can reduce the number of apprehensions by, er, not apprehending anyone. What we really want to know is how many people are coming into the country illegally. I’m not sure how we’d go about getting that figure or what the relation between apprehensions and that figure is.
I’m really not sure what the problem is here. I mean, these are now “Immigrant Reception Centers.” Practically Uncle Joe’s Disneyworld. All is most assuredly just fine. This is just conservative agitprop. And after all, the acid test: steve tells us that’s so.
https://www.zerohedge.com/political/border-facility-photos-leak-revealing-hundreds-children-huddled-terrible-conditions
You have 4 choices. It is all Biden’s fault, the ones you guys choose, without much support I would add. Second, it is just a continuation of the same process since April. Probably Covid related. Third, we are having a surge for the same reason as 2019, its just not as bad. Fourth, we dont know why it is happening.
So it is happening on Biden’s watch so he gets to clean it up. Might be partially his fault, but not clear. Last, kids were separated on purpose during the Trump administration. In this case we have kids who arrived unaccompanied. We arent separating families as a matter of policy.
Steve
The people at the border – the border patrol, their union leaders, residents living in towns close or around the border – dispute the claims that Trump screwed up. They say crossings diminished under his watch, that circumstances improved, with Trump’s approval numbers going up in these areas, winning him more votes in the November election. You could compare these people to being “front line†voices in assessing which presidential policy was more effective or not. It certainly is not Biden, who stripped away all of the constructs that were working, replacing them with nothing but lies on how well things were going at the border.
“Might be partially his (Biden) fault, but not clear.†—-> Steve
Whenever it came around to attributing a connection between cause and effect, during Trump’s presidency, Steve was abundantly clear that it was always Trump’s fault. Now, as migrants and drugs pour into the country (more fentanyl so far than all of last year), as cartel’s grip on the border grows and tightens, as detention centers are beyond their capacity with no COVID protective measures in place, as unofficial gag orders are in place and reporters are prevented from seeing any detention facilities, and incoming migrants are interviewed and asked if they would have come over under Trump’s presidency, with answers of “No,†there is no clarity for Steve in which to draw any conclusions about Biden’s policies. It must be that D next to Biden’s name that is blurring his vision.
