I stood in line on the very first day that the original movie, Star Wars, opened in Chicago. I watched the first showing, enthralled, with several friends. I thought that the plot and dialogue were dismaying but the effects and the storytelling were great. About halfway through the picture I turned to one of my friends and said, Buy stock in Fox (why don’t I take my own advice?). We came back and saw the movie again the next day.
As each movie in the first trilogy came out, I went to the theater and saw the picture.
I watched Episode I on video.
I haven’t seen Episode II.
So, should I see Episode III? When and why?
well, II is better than I, but I realize that that isn’t saying much. So, of course you should see it. As for III, I haven’t seen it yet but if you’ve gone this far, how could you not watch the “conclusion.”
Do what I’ll do: rent the DVD someday, enjoy it, then point out the daft bits afterwards.
Came across a great quote earlier in the week but can’t recall the link, about Lucas’s weakness with proper names (and plot, and character, and dialogue, and directing…).
Something like… ‘a missed opportunity for the immortal line: “You should never have come to Naboo, Dooku.”
Yes. Go see it. It’s worth it. In fact, it makes EpI and II unnecessary (since by itself it explains IV-VI almost single-handedly). Lucas finally got it right: mostly action, little dialogue, and what dialogue there is mostly consists of one-liners and shouting (which isn’t too hard for him to do).
Go see it. Don’t be afraid — this is the one we’ve all been waiting for since we first heard that the prequels would in fact see the light of day.
Whether or not you decide to see it, don’t miss Anthony Lane’s review in the New Yorker; I doubt the movie will be more enjoyable.
I caught it, thanks.
