I find the breastbeating and bloviation about some guy in New York getting elected to Congress who ran on a passel of lies incredibly tedious. I am shocked, shocked to hear about politicians lying. I could probably fill this page with jokes about politicians lying going back 200 or more years.
The only thing about it I find engaging is that I will find it interesting if New York Democrats find a way of criminalizing lying in politics. Stay tuned.
There are degrees of lying. This guy totally made up his background. Its really unusual to pack together so many of these kinds of lies so close together and about the same topic.
Steve
Unusual? Nah. Joe Biden has done it for 50 years on a routine basis.
Drew, sounds like a kettle calling a pot black, Apparently lying works even when you know it’s a pack of ______!
Really? Biden lied about what school he attended, where he worked, claimed his parents were in the Holocaust and covered up his criminal charges? Real charges, not the BS you guys keep trying to find. Everybody lies but in this case its at a level we dont see unless you are a Madoff or other blatant scammer.
Steve
The funny thing is Joe Biden has been in politics so long he’s basically done everything.

Biden out and out got caught plagiarizing speeches and at school, lying about his achievements at school, and with regards to the civil rights movement.
I’ve only once not voted for a candidate in an important seat, that was when one mayor certainly lied about having a college degree, very likely lied about the nature of a late night traffic stop, and other things too boring to detail. His Republican opponent was lying about where he lived (he had just built and moved into a McMansion outside city limits and then rented a cheap apartment in the city when he decided to run) and other things. Both exhibits extremes in over-the-top attacks against their opponents and whiny glass jaws when attacked in kind.
But we had reporters checking college and police records, and tailing the other candidate to his “home” every night. I gather New York does not have election coverage reporters any more?
Not my district or state so I don’t really care. It’s just amazing to me that no one caught on until after he won.
Just for Steve’s knowledge, Biden lied about schools he attended, his participation in the civil rights movement, who was at fault in his late wife’s accident, has plagiarized numerous speeches along with numerous other infractions of truth telling. As for this recently elected Republican, he seems no more slippery than any other DC politician – R or D.
They all seem to get rich in office – especially Pelosi – make enriching deals not necessarily for the benefit of their
constituencies (Omnibus Bill), make promises they don’t keep, and, in
the case of Biden and Clinton, have used their office for quid pro quo schemes and personal gain for their family and themselves.
None of this behavior is honorable. But, the public seems to accept it as long as it happens along the lines of their own party affiliation.
I presume that the possibility that he might win was discounted. Now they’re engaging in damage control.
Biden did not lie about attending DSU. You won’t be able to cite a quote with him saying that. Go ahead and try.

Did he lie about his wife’s accident. Maybe. He usually said that the drinking was alleged and there was apparently belief in the community, especially among first responders, that the guy had been drinking, however there was no proof. It was his wife’s fault for ignoring right of way but it may have made it easier to accept if he thought the truck driver was also partially responsible. Of note, Biden has apologized to the driver and family. (This was also influenced by the skid marks left by the truck being measured at about 150 feet. The speed limit was 35 mph so it was pretty clear he was speeding.)

So half your claims are wrong and just right wing stories, and the other half a bit more nuanced and spread out over 50 years. With this guy you got lies about where he worked, multiple places, a school he did not attend, his grandparents were Holocaust victims and his mother died in the tower on 9/11. He claimed he had employees at the Pulse club where people got shot. He even lied about his religion. All in one campaign. Plus no one knows how he got his money. In his prior campaign two years ago his financial statement said he had essentially no money then two years later he has lots.
So as I said above, everyone lies. Politicians lie. Biden has lied. This guy is at another level.
Steve
Here’s a rundown of President Biden’s misleading statements about his education. I think there’s a sitting member of Congress who lied about everything the guy lied about—just not in aggregate.
As I said in the post, I’m curious about how they’d go about criminalizing what the guy did. In some states lying on your application to run for office is a felony, in others not. I’m not sure how they’d go about criminalizing some prevarications but legalizing others. I’m not even sure it’s within the federal government’s authority.
I don’t think they can charge him to ban him from office. Powell v. McCormack rules that out.
The criminal liability would be if he lied to the FBI or under oath. Other liability would be if he slandered or defrauded people. I don’t know, can one defraud the electorate for the benefit of “electoral office”?
Biden didnt lie about which school he attended and he did fact graduate law school. He was a double major and I dont think he would be the first to conflate 2 majors with 2 degrees. As is noted in your article he made the claim once when he was mad about someone doubting his intelligence so he responded by exaggerating (lying) about what he did. Santos made up the entire thing. Saying you went to MIT and you were an A student when you were a B student is a lot different about claiming you went to MIT and never went there at all. Its not clear he attended any university, just that he claimed to attend Baruch and NYU, neither of which was true.

Biden is an egregious, serial liar. This Santos guy seems to be following in his footsteps. If Biden had resigned because of all his lies and falsehoods, then I would be behind Santos following his example. Since lies and embellishments of truth, though, seem to thrive in government it indicates the new guy is in good company.
