Heather provides a synopsis (which might well be as long as the movie itself), of the Syfy Channel’s movie, Sharknado. I’ll never watch the movie; you’ll probably never watch the movie. My take is that everybody who watches it pretty much deserve what they get for watching a movie called Sharknado.
Judging by her remarks it makes Attack of the Killer Shrews look like Citizen Kane by comparison. Anybody want to cue up Queen of Outer Space?
Ed Wood died long before his time.
He’d have found a real home on cable. Not to mention Netflix.
We used to love Mystery Science Theater 3000. Having long been a connoisseur of bad movies, we saw some of the worst movies ever made, including Manos, Hands Of Fate. There is still a soft spot in my heart (head?) for awful movies, but these bad movies, usually with a one word title (a giveaway) made over the last 10 years have no character. They feel like they were created by some guys in marketing, not some guys drinking too much or high on peyote, where I assume the inspiration for all of the real great bad movies came from.
So, I probably wont watch Sharknado either, unless a new MST3K decides to take it on.

Before there was MST3K, there was Mad Movies which gave an MST3K-like treatment to a whole host of movies, some cheesy, some actually pretty good flicks. It was hilarious and is still quoted in our household.
I’ll have to comment later. I’m watching Reefer Madness right now………
I watched a little of “Beginning of the End” on Svengoolie over the weekend. Its a 50s movie about giant grasshoppers created by radiation from a downstate college that set out to crawl on Chicago skyscrapers. I get a kick out of it because of the familiar geographic/college names, often incorrectly used. Otherwise, not really a fan of movies about animals gone giant or crazy.
Oh yeah, Svengoolie is a Chicago-based comedic-horror host with some national exposure.
Before Rich Koz took over the top hat, white makeup, and rubber chickens, Jerry G. Bishop was the original Svengoolie. He was the creator of all of the Svengoolie shtick including the “Berwyn ” running gag. Probably before your time.
I just remembered reading an interview with Bruce Campbell, if you know who that is. In the interview he something that surprised me, that the demographic for those horrible Saturday night SyFy flix is young women between, I think, 18 and 30. He also said that the films are produced on strict budgets of $2 million, and that they always make money for the channel.
Is this a great country or what?
Bruce Campbell is one of my favorites. The Adventures of Briscoe County, Jr. is a classic. IMO he’s the only thing that could make Burn Notice worth watching. And Sharon Gless (the last Warners contract player).
If you like Bruce Campbell then I hope you enjoyed Bubba Hotep. Certainly it’s one of my favorites. I’m not sure how I feel about the Evil Dead remake, but I was excited to hear a sequel to Army of Darkness focusing on Ash is in the works.
Bruce Campbell as Elvis and Ossie Davis as John Kennedy being pursued by an evil mummy? What’s not to like?
@sam, I cannot say I understand any particular appeal to women, but its my understanding that the SyFy movies almost always have a well-recognized actor in them. Perhaps the actor means something more to some than others?
@Dave, yes, the gag is before my time. The humor is pretty iffy on Svengoolie, but I do enjoy it when he points out the actors who’ve had other interesting roles before or after these movies.
Tremors is a good example of having a big name actor in a schlocky movie that helps to draw in people and makes it work (Kevin Bacon).

I’m a big Bruce Campbell fan as well. Sam Raimi (Bruce’s partner for Evil Dead and more) optioned one of my books and I’m hopeful that should we ever get a movie he’ll work Bruce in somehow.
