On ABC’s This Week program this morning I just heard someone say that the Justice Department is supposed to be independent. That is nonsense. I do not believe that anyone can be aware of or consider the JD’s actions over the period of the last seventy years and make that statement.
The Attorney General is basically the hatchman of the administration he or she serves. It’s been that way for my entire life and it was probably the case for Edmund Randolph.
The law has never been independent. There’s a lot police can do about a broken tail-light. Trump is the stupidest and densest cop out there, and he’s running into problems because everyone in DC is smarter than him.
And they are capable of creating illusions. Historically, I suspect that most of the people who abused power in this country had a grasp of what vice pays to virtue through hypocrisy, which is why there was almost always an attempt to create an illusion of fairness. It’s so obvious to me that Trump and his people do not have the faculties to see themselves through the eyes of others.
