If Thine Eye Offend Thee

Via Atlantic the French have been taking action to eliminate the preaching of radical Islamist hatred:

French authorities shut down 20 mosques and prayer halls they found to be preaching radical Islamic ideology since December, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Monday.

[…]

Of the country’s 2,500 mosques and prayer halls, approximately 120 of them have been suspected by French authorities of preaching radical Salafism, a fundamentalist interpretation of Sunni Islam, according to France 24.

“There is no place … in France for those who call for and incite hatred in prayer halls or in mosques … About 20 mosques have been closed, and there will be others,” Cazeneuve said.

Such actions would be violations of the Constitution here in the United States. Preventing foreign-born Salafist imams from entering the country or receiving support from outside the country would not be, however.

Closing mosques would be unconstitutional, but surely imams could be held accountable for speech that incites violence? I assume it’s a high bar to prove this though, and in addition, the removal of an imam might have unintended consequences- perhaps further radicalizing his followers.

@CStanley, advocating violence is protected by the Constitution. The relevant SCOTUS case (Brandenburg v. Ohio) involved an armed KKK rally where speakers called for revengeance against the n*****s and jews. The speech must call for imminent lawless action in order to be punished.

Perhaps, Mr. Khun, Hillary Clinton, President Obama, or any prominent Democrat could head over to France and explain to them that Islam is a religion of peace, and they are being racists.

Thanks PD, I guess I knew that and should have thought through before commenting. It’s unlikely that any of the imams’ public speech include direct calls for attacks.

If we let the Saudis buy our Presidents, why would those Presidents restrict Saudi money from funding radical Islamist institutions & people in the USA?

I think the French have more experience with Islamic immigration than Americans and we should watch carefully and learn. They are not the Amish, they don’t want to simply be left alone to practice their religion of peace. They have specific demands of YOU, which will become clear when they are the majority in your community.
