It should be noted that not all of the above cases are complete, and in not all cases have I been able to find a guilty verdict or plea. That is true of both lists.
The point of this is not to say that more kids are abused at home or more kids are abused at school. Given the relative populations, it is almost certain that more kids are abused by teachers than by parents who homeschool. But that is a misleading statistic. What matters is the rate at which abuse happens in both environments, and the truth is that there is so much hysteria around the subject – from all sides – that all that gets through is anecdote. Serious research on the topic does not appear to exist.
However, it should be immediately clear that it is facetious to argue that homeschooling promotes child abuse, and that children are safe in public schools. Neither conclusion is warranted from the available evidence. The sad fact is that some people are monsters, and some monsters homeschool children, and some monsters are public school teachers.
Demagoguery on this, like the cartoon I led off with, is simply disgusting; political point scoring on the backs of children is appalling. Oh, well, it doesn’t take a genius to draw a bad cartoon, and apparently it doesn’t even require a talent for drawing to get it published.

I think the difference is that if parents are abusing children, the school acts as a safety net, and that safety net is withdrawn when children are homeschooled, whereas kids who are abused at school presumably go home to parents who should be checking on them and making sure that they’re ok day to day. They still have protectors to fall back on, assuming their parents care about them.

I thought I was pretty clear about the fact that not everyone on these lists is necessarily guilty:
The cartoon I started off is facile: it is not necessarily more likely that kids will be abused in home schools than in public schools, and public schools are hardly havens from abuse.
I realize that not all of the people in either of those lists may be guilty of the abuse of which they are accused. That point is not central to my argument.
I think the students in public schools are a much bigger danger than the teachers. Assault, rape, murders in the worst ones, all under the media radar.

I am the mother of the victim of a teacher listed above! There is not a single doubt in my mind this happened…along with the police, and authorities. Other girls have come forward as well.So just because a teacher APPEARS nice, or is liked..DOES NOT MEAN he is not guilty!!!

Well, honey, I DO know the truth! I WILL voice my opinion and I AM very familiar with the truth!!!! I’m sorry you are mislead by the real Mike Neyhart! He admitted his guilt! And yes, to a much lesser degree. But that only proves he’s guilty of it all! What American would sit in jail for ANY amount of time, for something he or she DIDN’T do? NOT ONE RED BLOODED AMERICAN would! And Neyhart’s not any different! He just knew he’d be in prison for a very, very long time for his crimes, and this was his way of getting out of being a boyfriend to all those big bad men upstate! He certainly deserves it! But now all of Livonia knows he did it! AND now his wife does! I feel sorry for his father and his children! He should be kept away from them though!!! Just because he took a plea doesn’t mean he is guilty. Some of you who posted notes on this website are no better then someone who is actually guilty. Your comments and language are disgusting. It is a she said/he said case and you might never know the truth. But I can tell you one thing, his family doesn’t need your immature comments or actions. They didn’t do anything!
THis was not a he said/she said case. Mike Neyhart failed a lie detector test. There were 26 other girls who made complaints as well. How do I know? Im personally involved and know more details than most. Who gives an ounce of compassion to his wife! She sat in the court room like a spineless coward. She knew what she heard was the truth! To the teachers of Livonia ..you know who you are..the very fat French teachers…you are an absolute DISGRACe to the teaching profession. Your smiles and happiness were certainly a discmfort to a family and victim who have suffered enough. If you believed in his innocence..stay neutral and stay home! I haven’t really followed the case, but think of it was you who was accused or your husband or friend, wouldn’t you trust what they say. You can’t imagine what someone is going through until you have gone through it. If that is your husband and he has given you no reason to doubt him, then why would you. It is just a sad situation for every one involved.

Does any one know the facts in this case. I only know what I have heard in the news and that isn’t much.
Here are some of the facts. The victim WAS a Livonia central school student and was 13. (contrary to what Dave Deloria and Karen Bennett tell you) ALL incidents HAPPENED ON SCHOOL GROUNDS inside an office Neyhart had a key to. Victim does not currently live in NY State but told her story over a year and half ago. When Mike Neyhart was arrested, he recieved a lie detector test which he failed 100%! HE had keys to the rooms the victim had referenced. He also carried a pocket knife in which he used to force her against her will. (which is the menacing charge he meekly plead guilty too) I would like to add this little piece of information..there are other girls out there who have signed sworn statements against his misconduct. Some even went to the school and complained. Nothing was ever done. Those other girls….are they all liars too? Hardly! Neyhart had an obvious pattern to stalk his prey and is too lengthy to explain here. Most people are not familiar with how a victim of such an awful crime comes forward. Children of molestation do not tell right away! So therefore,,,,a he said/she said case is not in question. I saw Mike neyhart in court, I saw his family. The only person I saw in tears at any point before pleading guilty was his innocent elderly father. I dont believe for one second his wife felt any remorse for the victim or the family. I think she was only thinking of her reputation and her husbands. I believe completely that she heard testimony so moving and disturbing, that she put puzzle pieces together. YET..she sat stone still and did not have the moral character to admit anything. I think that I can honestly say, she fits within the “unfit mother” catagory. I know the mother of the victim yelled out to her..”How do you live with a child molester” and “what if this was your child suffering” and YET AGAIN..she just smirked. Logically guessing here…but maybe she and her husband deserve one another.
Now I know I will get a few nasty comments thrown back at me. But you can take this to the bank! I know…Im the victims mother. And nothing anyone can say now surprises me at how low peoples morals and lack of humanity can stupe to. My daughter has suffered immensely and so has our family. Won’t be so big then. As far as the board goes, It is time for change. Do you know that Dave woodruff has been on the school board for about 20 years now? Times change folks, and it is time for the right people to go up there. People who will stand up for our kids. REALLY STAND FOR THE KIDS. Our kids have no say at all in this school. The big man always makes the decisions even for the school board. We need someone or many who will stand up to the super and the principles and let them know who is BOSS. We the people who pay their salaries. If we don’t get some strong people to work for Livonia School we are going to go down even further. What happened to this little girl would never have happened if we had some balls in our school district. Start fighting for our kid, people, otherwise we are a lost cause!

How could he do all of these horrible things happen during a time when the school was filled with students participating in after school activities? The room she described ISN’T there. Bull about the “remodeling”. Where are all these other girls who were tortured at knifepoint? Where is the scar on MN wrist from cutting himself and blaming her? Wouldn’t someone have screamed if they were being raped at knifepoint? How come nobody found her when she was knocked unconcious from him pushing her against a pencil sharpener? How can she “not remember” any of the swim teams she competed against in school? How was the door locked from the inside when there are no locks on the doors? What is this “pattern” that was so obvious? Where will her crazy story end? This story makes NO SENSE. It will end in a civil suite because this is about money. A member of the jury had to be replaced because of her actions.
The alledged abuse took place in a classroom according to the victim not in a office. She can’t even get the facts correct.

This post was originally written 18 months ago. Jeff Medcalf, the author of the original post, hasn’t posted here in quite some time. Since then more than 1,000 posts have been posted at this blog: this post isn’t the only thing here.
I notified Jeff some time ago of the activity in the comments thread to his post and I’m hoping he’ll do some mediation here.
I would request all commenters to stick to demonstrable facts and leave the speculation and, above all, the insults out.
I am considering shutting down the comments to this post but I’d prefer to wait for Jeff before doing so.

As a friend of the victims family I thank you for looking into closing this site down.
No doubt the supporters of this molester feel they need to continue victimizing the family and the child with false information and lies.
The most important fact to consider is how with every ugly word or lie they say about this innocent girl, they deter any other victim from speaking out. There are other girls who are coming forward at this time and to read this would be upsetting to say the least.
The victim hopefully does not lower to the standards of these post and opens these to read. Thankfully she is being heavily protected by her family.

For all of you that support Neyhart, you all should turn around and look again. All of you have probably been told by him that he loves you or what not and you sick individuals believed him and hadn’t fallen into his trap yet.
I’m very close with the hero and was there for the whole trial. I know the facts. I’m not like the rest of you who come out and say things when the only source you have is word of mouth. in my eyes, thats sad.
To start off no one should be calling her a victem. She is a hero. Thoes of you who support her know what I am talking about, but for thoes who don’t, listen up. She teaches swim lessons to kids. She doesn’t just teach swimming to them during their lessons. She teaches what to do in different situations. She feels that now there is one more person that can’t put kids through what she had to go through. She is my hero. It takes so much strength, and courage to come up front with this and go in front of a group of people and tell them every little detail. I look up to her and I am very proud. While in the court she felt trapped. Feeling like she was in the room again with Neyhart.
To He’s innocent. How about you get your facts right before you talk? Do you really know what kind of questions were being asked by Neyhart’s lewyer? 5 years ago what day of the week was christmas on? how about thanksgiving? What day of the week was this swim meet on? and this went on and on for hours. did u know any of this? i doubt it. i doubt you remeber what happened 5 minutes ago let along 5 years. These questions go to prove that the defense had nothing to work with and were pulling things out of their asses to try and defend that scumbag. I know for a fact she has never watched or read Wild Things. She hadn’t even heard of it at the time. I love how people come and post things with out a clue to whats really happening. Sentencing day is coming…………. September 29th 9:00 a.m. Too bad he’s only getting 4 months of weekends! It’s a terrible shame! He should be spending YEARS in prison! Oh well! Food for thought: It seems to me that if the district attorney really thought MN was guilty, he would not have agreed to the plea bargin he did. Fact, MN was not convicted of any sex crime, he agreed to a plea to a mush lesser crime for 4 months of weekends in a work release program, loss of his teaching certificate, and three years probation. How many of us would have accepted this deal, rather than face the possibility of going to jail for 25 yrs for something we did not do? I am sure you realize there are innocent people sent to jail every day! Just look at the prisoners that have been recently released after DNA tests showed they were innocent, and this after spending years on death row! I do not know if MN is guilty or not. And I certainly am concerned about the alleged victim and her the trauma she says she has been through. But, i can tell you if i was the district attorney, i would never have agreed to a deal so lenient if I really thought he was guilty of the sexual crimes he was accused of. What would the D.A. have lost if he had continued with the case? Something does not make sense. On the other hand, if an accused person was innocent, i could see him/her choosing to take a deal that would keep him/her out of jail so that he/she would not miss out on their childrens lives! And especially if I knew I was innocent, I new that God knew I was innocent, what anyone else would think they knew to be true simply would not matter. Personally, as a christian,I pray for the victim and for MN. their respective families and friends. I pray that the vitrolic sputterings of angry people be put to rest as well. To let you understand this clearly. The district attorney was not the person to accept the plea. The family had to agree to it, the victim had to agree to it. The victim/hero came forward with this over a year and half ago and due to our justice system, she was faced with a judge that WAS NOT elected by the people of Livingston County..in fact was APPOINTED not ELECTED to her position in MONROE COUNTY. From beginning of the trial the DEFENSE was the one receieving prejudicial treatment…if anything…the defense had a much better chance of winning than the prosecution. The deal was accepted by the family because the innocent young woman was set to begin college the following day and had spent 4 agonizing days on the stand being asked over and over and over details like…”what day was Christmas that year? What day was your swimmeet? What time did this happen?” Would anyone of you remember what time and what day something SO TRAUMATIC happened to you???????? Try to remember what you were doing a WEEK AGO. The District Attorneys office was moved to tears on SEVERAL OCCASSIONS fearing this MONSTER was about to walk out free! The family watched their beautiful,truly honest, and deeply caring daughter be put thru a justice system designed to protect the accused. If your a parent reading this, would you want your child to continue going through this IF YOU KNEW you could end it by his plea? Factual….THE PLEA WAS NOT OFFERED BY THE D.A’s office…THE PLEA WAS PRESENTED TO THE DA AND THE FAMILY BY HIS ATTORNEY! PLEASEEEEE people..do not believe that the DA wanted this guy to walk away. But there are other girls…there are more. What will you all say when you hear that? How many sweet young children have to come forward for you to get it? I guess its better to deny the sickness than admit to it, but it ALWAYS comes out in the end and when the next victims are presented in court maybe then you will all FINALLY see the light.
Were you or any family members aware that there was another potential suspect in this case that had taught at the school at the same time, looked very similar to MN and was in the same department at the school, allegedly went on to at least one more school and had accusations made against him at the other school that he had acted inappropriately with female students? I think this seems a bit too coincidental, don’t you? I am very concerned that the state police were so convinced they had their “man” that they did not pursue this lead adequitely. My major concern here is that i too want to ensure that the real deviat is kept off the streets and away from children. As i understand it, the similarities between MN and the other individual are almost scarey there were so many. It would seem to me that this type of deviat is any parents worst nightmare! And, in my opinion, this case was bungled from the beginning, if this lead was not completely exhausted as well as pursuing MN. And as was said earlier, for the victim to remember as every detail of a haunting situation like this, would not be possible;I think she could have been influencedto believe by the powers to be that MN was the deviat, even if it was done inadvertantly. The police and the DA had a responsibility to completely investigate this incident without prejudice. I wonder if that was done. My worry is, as yours is, that children may continue to be victimized. After all the trauma the victim has been through, that is a tragedy!

The victim looked right at Mike Neyhart and pointed directly AT HIM! She also described him by age, height,etc. She pointed to his picture right next to the “accused” you refer to.
You can try to justify this anyway possible…and there probably is/was TWO ASSAILANTS at LIVONIA CENTRAL SCHOOL! But there is not a doubt in the families minds, the victims minds…the DA and the police…that WE GOT THE RIGHT GUY!

ANd information given to me directly involved in the case said the victim did not pick him out of the year book initially. It was later that she identified him. I heard that the defendants lawyer doesnt want any of us talking about his client on this blog. I would think as a lawyer he would understand the Fifth Amendment. From a reliable source, Ive heard that he even brought it up at the attackers Sentencing. Did he think anyone felt sorry for MikeNeyhart? Of course people are going to say things, and want to say things, To express their anger and disgust.

It is very hard for me to believe that he did everything he was accused of.

Like I said, I don’t know all the facts. I don’t even know what was presented at the trial. But I find it very hard to believe.
Some of the people who knew him best (the Miller family for example) stood by him. And I don’t think it was just because they were friends.
Lie detector tests are crap, and I don’t even know why they are used as any sort of evidence anymore.

Which by the way, is shown on the diagram and HAS been remodeled. Perhaps the person telling you these stories doesnt know what they are talking about? I think its hard for anyone to believe that he may have done these things. But he did. And he admitted it. Your comments about the girls who complained, you dont know that story either. The Distrcit said in the letter that the money will be paid from “District’s Insurance Reserve” and goes on to say that it will not “impact this year’s instructuional budget.” This appears to be spin for “No cost to you” which is, of course, BS. The reserve is cash money and you’ll pay next time around. Don’t think for a minute the District sent this letter to every district tax payer because they have embraced the right attitude. Seems he had his hand in it from the beginning and stuck around to deal with it. That seems OK on its face, but it seems he was at the helm and it was his ship that sunk. These people could have avoided the $350,000 in my opinion by doing the right thing in the beginning. Having mishandled the original complaints about Neyhart, they could have overcome that by doing the right thing instead of trying to cover butt. The spin campaign to say this victim was after money, had mental problems, etc. was the way to keep good old LCS the victim. This girl is as squared away as any you will meet. She suffered DAYS of examination by one of the most arrogant attorneys you could meet. He did not give her any quarter yet she prevailed. Then the attorney approached the DA with the Guilty Plea offer. The victim only wanted his admission. His pleading to avoid the off-chance finding that he would go to prison by error is BS. He knew this girl was not the same one he put a knife to in a room when she was a little girl. She was tougher now; he was the one that had to be scared. His friends don’t want to believe that he could do something like this. I doubt he acted like this in front of his friends. I can’t blame them, I’m sure he had his good points. It’s just that his bad points are overwhelming. But they were not around when he had his other face on. But, talk to students who were in his class, even some that got along with him say he was out there with his leering and comments. There were so many statements from students, male and female, regarding Neyhart’s behavior as well as subsequent complaints to the administration that the District could not afford to not settle the lawsuit. To bad in a way, as the whole story could have been told, not the narrow one allowed after defense objections in a criminal case. Different rules in the Civil trial. Well it is almost over. Dave Deloria has retired and had the one building named after him. Karen Bennett had her vote for Tenure extended for a year last summer. That should be coming up around June 2007 I believe. Let your school board know how you feel. Hopefully it is now Students safety first and not the administrations. They don’t have enough buildings left to name them all after each other.

I knew the girl, she was in my class. She would do anything for attention. Anything does include taking down an innocent man. But hey you absent minded people just assume because he plead guilty that hes a horrible horrible man. Dont stop and think that he has family values, and that if the jury made a mistake that he would have not seen his children until they were in their 40’s…no that couldnt be it. Court cases over, money sent to the victim(..which is not enough in my book) and people, although very few, are still replying with slurs. She should have gone to court, made the school stand accountable. Her parents sent her in trust and they betrayed that trust. Its just disgusting! Absolutely appalling!
Did you know that Livonia school district does not carry insurance if a faculty member harms your child????? Yes. Ask Mr.Bishioping about that and ask for a copy of the schools insurance policy. Basically, they can hire someone, that person can molest, beat, hurt your child and they say they dont carry a clause in the insurance for that or simply, We didnt know.
The good people out there who are intelligent enough to know that among you in Livonia lives a man who has/can/ and will again..harm one of your children, I hope you stand watch on him. Dont let him walk into public areas without watching his every move. Dont sit next to him in church, because forgiveness is not there. Dont let Mike Neyhart feel free. He should stand and face the people he decieved and be accountable forever to the little victim he tortured and destroyed.

At least at the age of 40 and not 13..they could fight him off.
He should not be allowed to parent and I think the family of the victim should insist on his parental rights being observed.
The mother/wife should also have her parental rights observed as she probably continues to lie next to a sexual deviant.
Well, I’ve read some horrible things that have been said on this post, and some of them have come from me. However I’ve decided I want to make sure everyone realizes not only how pointless this has become but how immature some of the posts are (including some of my own). I apologize for name calling and blind judgements I have posted on this blog and I hope that others will follow in accepting the fact that everyone has their opinion and we shouldnt attack them for stating it. My belief has been, and will continue to be that Michael Neyhart is an innocent man caught up in a storm of uncertainties. There are those of you who dont believe that is true and that’s fine. It’s your right to have an opinion even if it doesnt follow with mine. So I just ask that the harshness on this message board at LEAST die down a bit, wishing death upon people you dont even know, and their families?! Thats pushing it overboard and you are no better than the past commentors that you are replying to. I dont want an angry response to this comment, or anyone to yell at me for it so please dont. Im apologizing for being inconsiderate to people I dont even know, and their opinions. I believe in your right to have your opinions, so please believe in mine.

Excuse me? Forgiveness is not there? Mr. Neyhart may have done great wrong here, but he has not done so much as to not be forgiven if he is repentant. Perhaps you of his congregation can not forgive the man, but God can, and a church is a house of God.
You people march to the beat of your “moral authority,” and yet you are so callous. You attack his wife, whose duty it is to stand by her husband, ’til death do them part. Why do you wish for her to die with her husband? Hell, why do you wish Mr. Neyhart to commit suicide? Those aren’t the thoughts of a Christian, no matter how many hosannas you sing. A Christian should forgive, as Christ forgave.
Now I am deeply regretful for what happened to this girl. Deeply. But as much as I feel for her, I feel just as much for this man and his family. If he did molest her, and if he did molest other girls, I pray for him just as much as his victims. I do not wish him harm. I do not practice an eye for an eye. I pray he gets his life straightened out and his problems fixed.
Those of you that so quickly pass judgment should think twice. Those people that have responded on this blog that are friends of Neyhart have said some callous things about this girl, but you have slung it right back at them. You have said of them, “His followers/friends are of the lowest life out there,†amongst other things much worse. Yet are they not doing what you are doing? Are they not defending a loved one who they feel is a victim? People will see in this case what they want to see, because there is enough evidence out there for both sides to cling to. So all I can do is quote Jesus, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.â€
The tragedy lies on both sides of this case. The girl will live with this forever, but she has a chance for a new life. She can do whatever she wants to do. She can go anywhere she wants to go. She can be a normal person. Mr. Neyhart, a son, a husband, a father, no longer has that luxury, really. Wherever he goes he will be watched. His children will be harassed. His punishment at the very least will be one that a watchful, diligent society will produce for him, keeping him constantly imprisoned by his past actions, no matter what he does. And this is what should happen, for the safety of children, but that does not make him an animal as has been suggested. It makes him a man… a man whose father in heaven still loves him, that must now live a caged life because he was led astray. To me, that is tragic. I say if we are half the Christians we think we are, we will pray for both families, and reach out to comfort both families.

Where was Jesus when Neyhart was doing his crimes? The only victim here is this little girl and I hope you are right, Mr.Righteous, that the people in his town will never let him forget. I dont think its god that will be with Neyhart in eternity. I think the devil already owns his soul.
As far as your comment about his wife staying with her husband, well that is just pathetic. Should a woman stay in bed next to a man who prefers a little girl? A man who shows violent tendencies? If thats religion and Gods will, then you can have it!

The only thing I believe right now is that if this was your child, you would feel absolutely differently and you would ask your god where he was when your child was being violated.

I am asking people to please please, just stop writing these things on here. Yes, initially the anger for Mike Neyhart was and is so great that I felt some comfort in the nasty things people said about him, because he does deserve every bit of it. And I found it hard to read the things people said about my child because they dont know what we live with each and everyday. My lawyer tells me not to say anything, to rise above it. It isnt that easy. I will not ever forgive or nor will ever I forget what he has done to my child and my family. Please dont send me a blog about Jesus and forgiveness. I respect your right to forgive, please respect my right not to. The old phrase about “walking a mile in my shoes” is so true here. People get blinded by rumors and propoganda delivered to them. It no longers matters who does or does not believe that this happened. I know everyday of my life that this happened to my child. I know the graphic details withheld in court and how they wouldnt let her story be told. I had to watch teachers who taught my daughter, sit in the courtroom giggling and talking as if they didnt just hear horribly graphic details of sexual abuse and these are women left with someone elses children. I was told by the school that they would support my family 100% and never returned our calls. I saw his wife’s face and I KNOW she knew things she did not dare to admit. I had hoped in my comments to her, she would have the motherly compassion and stand strong but she did not. I dont hate her, I just feel very very sorry for her and I hope she keeps both eyes open in the future and doesnt live in blindness. Believe what you want to, if it makes you feel better, or sleep better at night, or see him in public. My child had absolutely nothing at all to gain by coming forward and claims to such seem small minded. Instead she faced ridicule and had to read these blogs about her character. You dont have to believe our story, but I ask this of you. Please just stop sending these blogs. Please stop saying things based only an ugly rumor. Mike Neyhart did not hurt just my child, he hurt a family. The only thing I have left to believe in is that Mike Neyhart might someday admit to himself he is sick and admit to his sins. If he can sit in church and truly pretend to want forgiveness, he might do that. But I saw him face to face and I dont believe that he has any remorse, only regret on that he didnt scare my child enough that she would never come forward. Thank you, NY State Police, DA’s office, and countless other state officials who helped us, who believed in us. You were the ones who got to see all the evidence and not just little bits and pieces. I cannot even begin to understand that people within your own community would think you went on some witch hunt against this man. Your the very core of what stands right in our society. Now having been so many years passed. I believe Samantha made this all up. She has done the same thing to her brother, mother, college roommate, and boyfriends. Made up she was pregnant a few times. Attacked her mother and her brother and made up very crazy stories. As a close family member, we all know that she now made this up. If you reach out to her mother she may admit it. Her father will never although he was the first one to suspect her of lying. Samantha needs help because she will continually do this to people in her life. Her mother has expressed great sadness that her daughter is so mentally ill and could make up such a devastating story. As her family, we can not be around her and choose not to have her in our lives. Mike Neyhart, you were wrongly accused.
