Fred Allen of the Day

I’m frequently reminded of a wisecrack of Fred Allen’s: a committee is a group of people who individually can do nothing but as a group decide that nothing can be done. It’s certainly convenient. I think it was Aristotle who described human beings as rational animals. Maybe “rationalizing animals” probably would have been closer to the mark.

When I was volunteering actively in our son’s schools, I tacked a postcard on the wall behind my desk showing a bunch of chickens in a group. The saying on it was “If you want to get nothing done join a committee.” That was so true, even in the venues of school business. Oftentimes, even the process to fund pizza for the jazz band was so tedious, I would pay for it myself!
