Does Medal Inequality Present a Problem?

Mark Perry presents a table of the distribution of Olympic medals side by side with the distribution of income. One difference between the two that I can think of is that there may be a better case that getting medals influences the judges to award you more medals in the case of income than in the Olympics. In either case my concern is more about the role of the Romanian judges in the awarding of medals than in who gets the medals.

As I’ve tried to indicate before I think a lot of the argument over income inequality is misdirection. I see very little discussion of redistribution from the top 10% of income earners to the bottom 10% of income earners and lots of discussion of redistribution among people in the top 10% of income earners. On behalf of the bottom 10%, of course.

The discrimination against the poorer countries is apparent before the games even begin. How blatent was it for the imperialist dogs to force one team to compete under the name ” Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” ?

  • While watching some of the games I noticed there are a number of US competitors that weren’t born here. It seems we are, in essence, “poaching” athletes from other countries.
