Do You Care?

Do you really care about Brexit and why?

I don’t first and foremost because I don’t think it is any of my business. The Brits can do any damn fool thing they want to with their own country.

It seems like a litmus test. If you are a conservative you should like it. If liberal oppose it. I dont think I understand the UK well enough since I dont live there to really know what will happen. I just assume that they deserve whatever happens, good or bad.

  • That’s basically my view.

I also would caution people that Labour is not the equivalent of the Democratic Party and the Tories are not the equivalent of the Republican Party. Truth be told, the Tories are closer to the Democratic Party. Both of our parties would fit within the political stance of the Tories.

It is a signal marker – that whatever happens; things have occurred that will not be reversed for generation or more.

I suspect in the medium / long term it will have a big impact on American policy vis a vis Europe.

The U.K. is a big reason why Americans have deep engagements with Europe for 100 years.

That’s a good observation and I think true. However, it raises the question as to whether that has been in the U. S. interest or not? IMO it is not, at least in the form it has taken which is pursuing German interests in Europe rather than our own much as we pursue Israeli interests in the Middle East.

About a year ago, I stopped following American politics on a regular basis and started following British politics. It satisfied my interests in politics from a remove and gave me an opportunity to see how a different system works in the context of what might be described as an existential crisis. It was also a good entry point because it seems like the average Brit didn’t understand how their system worked very well either, so there has been some good writing.

I’ll probably start paying more attention to American politics this year, but not today.

  • British Parliament has a number of differences from our House:

    1. It is much larger relative to the total population.
    2. The median age is much younger.
    3. Its members aren’t mostly lawyers.

A major difference between our government and theirs is that they separate the role of head of state (the Queen) from that of head of government (the Prime Minister). When these factors are combined it makes their politics a lot livelier than ours.
