Day Book, June 6, 2005

Today is the 61st anniversary of the D-Day invasion of Normandy. A number of bloggers have fine observations and commentary:

The Dawn Patrol feature at Mudville Gazette has its own rundown of D-Day posts.

I remember when Saving Private Ryan came out my wife and I attended a Thursday afternoon matinee. Most of the other people in the audience were men and women in their 70’s or 80’s. When the movie ended little could be heard but gentle weeping. Big, strong, tough men were weeping at the thoughts of friends and brothers killed during the war. I can’t imagine what they went through but it’s to them that we owe the lives we live today.
