The original Stars and Stripes   The Stars and Stripes of today

On June 14, 1777 the Continental Congress adopted the flag we know as the “Betsy Ross” flag as the official standard of the United States:

Resolved, That the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.

Today is Flag Day. Long may she wave!

UPDATE: a great post with much more detail on the flag and Flag Day from my blog-friend Callimachus of Done With Mirrors. He also mentions The Star Spangled Banner. As I wrote in my post, Anthems, I never really got The Star Spangled Banner until after 9/11. Now I get it.
