Meanwhile, here in Chicago, we have as many murders on the South Side many weekends as Charleston saw on that dreadful day that has caused a national uproar. The Confederate Battle Flag does not fly over City Hall. We have as stringent gun control laws as the Constitution will allow. More stringent, actually.

Other than their votes, white liberals/progressives have little use for poor black lives. They want nothing to do with poor black people, and I have heard too many racist crap from those who live around a high percentage of poor black people.
Other than the money to be made, the black leaders have little use for poor black lives. They too want nothing to do with poor black people. Look for them where the white liberals/progressives are located.
Other than the security a terrorized local population provides, the criminals have little use for poor black lives. They want nothing to do with poor black people, but they provide a base of operation. If a few get killed along the way, so be it.
Other than the opportunity to tut-tut, white conservatives have little use for black lives. They want nothing to do with poor (or any) black people. Some of them may be racist, but most of them are scared of saying the wrong thing and being labeled a racist. They really do not want to live around too many black people, and they do not understand “ghetto” culture. (We are the same but different.)
Finally, poor black people have little use for black lives. This may seem bizarre and harsh, but poor people do not have time for luxuries such as contemplating one’s place in the universe. Poor people spend most of their time trying to put food on the table, keep a roof over their head, and make sure they have clothes on their back and shoes on their feet – in that order. Any spare time is spent trying to wring a little joy out of a sh*tty existence.
They are not heartless. They care about their family and friends, but when you live in the rough part of town, you had better get tough fast. Otherwise, you would not be able to function. At some point, these conditions become “normal”, and they are nothing more than street traffic or a dog barking. It is like fear on the battlefield. You just push it aside.
Revolutions are not started by the poor. The poor rarely riot, and when they do, it takes a lot to set them off. These are luxuries they cannot afford. So too with black lives. Caring for poor black lives are a luxury that poor black people can rarely afford.
