A Sad Day

Donald Trump’s Super Tuesday victories weren’t the only sign of the apocalypse announced today. Netflix is renewing Fuller House for a second season:

Critics be damned. The “House” party will continue.

Netflix on Wednesday announced that it has rewarded a second season to “Fuller House,” the spinoff of the popular 1980s sitcom “Full House.”

The renewal comes less than a week after the show premiered on the streaming site. It also comes despite plenty of scorn-filled reviews from critics and even some fans. The show scored a lowly 32 on Rotten Tomatoes.

Still, “Fuller House,” which triggered an avalanche of social-media buzz during the buildup to its premiere, must have tugged on the nostalgic heart strings of millions of devotees. But we don’t know for sure how many viewers streamed the show since Netflix has a policy against releasing audience data.

Nobody every lost money by betting on the poor taste of the American public.

But here’s a question for you. What “classic” TV series would you like/dread seeing in a modern reincarnation with or without the original cast?

    Dread? The Cosby Show?

Sorry if I depress the thread by that show was probably _the_ family sitcom of my era. Before that it was Family Ties, and I would also completely dread someone trying to remake a sitcom built around generational cultural/political divides. But before recent event, I would have thought grandpa Huxtable would be pretty cool.

  • I don’t know. How about “All in the Family–the Next Generation”.

“All in the Family” had a harder political edge, and O’Connor played Archie as a complex character with a good deal of heart. I don’t think this generation of writers and actors could do both. The edge would be varnished to avoid “micro-aggression,” and Archie would be an out-and-out villain. The language used then, was merely shocking at the time, and simply unimaginable today.

This is the golden age of television with far higher standards for writing, acting and shooting than in any previous age. There’s a very long list of really spectacular shows. Anyone believing TV is too restricted by PC should check out Louis CK’s new show, Horace and Pete, starring an amazing Alan Alda in a non-comedic Archie Bunkeresque role, an equally impressive Jessica Lange and the always reliable Steve Buscemi. Very dark, very gown-up.

London Spy is amazing TV, Downton Abbey and Good Wife are wrapping up with less than stellar seasons, but with very impressive records. The Expanse is good if not quite great, The Colony is good. In comedy Mom is surprisingly good, mixing broad humor and more sophisticated material, You, Me and the Apocalypse is amazing, It’s Always Sunny is still chugging along.

There’s a lot of great TV now, an embarrassment of riches. I’m frankly jealous and wish I could be a part of it, but setting aside my age and lack of experience, there’s the problem of it being basically a staff job with office hours and commutes and and other humans to deal with, and my life right now is too soft for me to pursue that with much conviction.

Is Louis CK on ABC or CBS?

I have to admit that in the context of the question, I was assuming a similar scope of broad appeal, not the fragmented viewership of the better shows in today’s non-major network landscape.

Anyway, michael, answer the man’s question. Do you disavow the KKK and what classic TV show would you like or dislike to see resurrected?

    PD:

Louis is distributing via his own web site for $5. Very interesting.

As for the question, I have a professional disdain for remakes. Your job as a writer is to create something original. The remake of Battlestar Galactica is one exception. But as a rule you’re supposed to be getting paid for your imagination.

I’m surprised no one’s done Bewitched yet. You could do a refresh of that.

I had to refresh my memory that they did a Bewitched movie a few years ago w/ Nicole Kidman, but in doing so saw that a Bewitched tv show is in production. Yeah, I find a lot of remakes odd and unappealing. I noticed Full House reruns when scanning cable of late, and I guess the idea is that parents who grew up on Full House are a hook to get their kids to watch. I’m skeptical.

Disney and Nick are essentially doing the family shows of yesteryear, and they seem to have a couple that have witches/wizards navigating regular high school or something. Not much need to pay the license fee to make that kind of show.

    Any of them.

Brady Bunch. File it under dread.

Joanie loves chachi. File it under I’d rather be dead.

How about a PC Gunsmoke. Or drive the feminists crazy with Petticoat Junction, Father Knows Best or the current version of a scantily clad Goldie Hawn on Laugh in. Hazel could be a lesbian in the modern version. Mission Impossible? Wait, they did that with 24. Ben Carson cast as shaft? Oh, hell. Burn it all. It’s all crap. Just give me Monty Python reruns.

I’d think Beverly Hillbillies is a good candidate.

M*A*S*H set during Iraq War could be interesting. Or awful, depending on the talent brought to the project.

Haha Ben- now that you mention it, I think it would be awesome if they’d rework that premise with a nouveau riche Manhattan real estate developer setting up his estate in Palm Beach.

Moonlighting, maybe. There’s enough quirk there to mine into something new.Or Hogan’s Heroes, just for the absurdity of it. They’re redoing Twin Peaks, starting next year, but in no way was that popular.

I can think of few sitcoms with a laugh-track that are capable of being watched now. Seinfeld, Cheers, Newsradio, probably Golden Girls for its camp factor, all of Bob Newhart, and maybe a couple others.

  • Modulo Myself Link

The setting for the new Hogan’s Heroes should be Guantanamo. But no darkness.

    Fantasy Island….
