A Modest Proposal

I think the time has come to admit that the elected representatives of the people have become an intolerable encumbrance in making progress on the many problems we face as a nation. In recognition of the inadequacy of existing institutions I propose the establishment of a 15 member Independent Policy Advisory Board. The policy prescriptions of the IPAB will become the law of the land unless they’re voted down by the Congress.

In a spirit of selfless devotion to the country’s wellbeing, I volunteer to serve on this IPAB.

  • If I could find a horse, I’d volunteer to be your outrider. Of course, the last time I got off one I couldn’t walk for three days.

  • These cowgirl boots really work. Come to find out the legal firm involved in this mess hadn’t done THEIR work.

    It’s done today. Yippee-ky-yi-ay!

  • In the spirit of bipartisan comity, I’d be willing to join you on the board. Although, I must say, 15 is an unwieldy number. Too much possibility for dissent with that many folks.

  • Katie needs a pair of cowgirl boots, James, if she doesn’t have some already.

    Agreed.

Adding yet another layer of bureaucracy/government is probably not going to solve things.

OMG! Dave doesn’t believe that cutting taxes will cure everything. He doesn’t think Israel should dictate our foreign policy. He is probably a Swiss, anti colonialist bent upon destroying America.

That said, I think a parliamentary govt. would probably get you to the same place.

    Yeah, nowhere…but eventually we’ll get it right….bahahahaha….

Is the problem politicians or institutions? If it’s politicians, then the problem is us. If it’s institutions, then the solution is fixing the institutions. Appointing a quasi-dictatorial panel to ride roughshod over existing institutions (presumably on a temporary basis?) doesn’t sound like an appealing solution to me.

    Steve,

I like the idea of a parliamentary system, but I think that system only works well for homogenous populations.

@Andy- I think it is more the politicians, i.e. it is us. I have no idea how to fix that. The 24 hour outrage machine shows no sign of relenting. People can, and do, completely seal themselves in the bubble of their choice. I think we can try changing the institutions to compensate, but I really dont think the politicians will let us do that right now.

Man, some people can’t recognize a joke no matter how much you beat ’em over the head with it….

Heh, I guess I should have seen it. I have a difficult time telling the difference for online stuff.
