Here’s a real film buffy question. Alfred Hitchcock always put himself in his movies. For instance, in North by Northwest he can be seen getting off a bus. How’d he do it in the film Lifeboat, where all the action takes place in the lifeboat?
It’s been decades since I’ve seen Lifeboat but I think that his picture appears in a newspaper photo.
Yeah. He’d lost some weight, so he had a newspaper ad made up for some weight reduction potion. In the ad were two photos of him: pre- and post-weight loss. One of the actors is reading the page on which the ad occurs.
I wasn’t familiar with Huston’s dad, and I’m surprised hat he was the wise-old codger in The Treasure of the Sierra Nevada. John Huston always struck me as a scary guy, probably because I first was introduced to him in Chinatown.
Walter Huston was an incredibly brilliant actor. Check out Dodsworth some time.
He was also the reason for one of the greatest songs in the American song book: September Song from the musical Knickerbocker Holiday. The song was written for him specifically at his request by Kurt Weill and Maxwell Anderson.
