Robot Hall of Fame

Yesterday as I was cruising around I heard a brief feature about the Robot Hall of Fame and it got me to thinking. If you were nominating candidates to the Robot Hall of Fame whom would you nominate? Inductees are both real and fictional and current inductees are:

  • HAL 9000 (IMO highly objectionable since not a robot)
  • Mars Pathfinder Sojourner Rover
  • R2-D2
  • Unimate (the first robotic arm on an assembly line back in the 1960’s)
  • ASIMO
  • Astro-Boy
  • Robby, the Robot
  • C-3PO
  • AIBO
  • SCARA (another industrial robotic arm)
  • David (from the movie AI)
  • Maria (the mechanical woman from the movie Metropolis)
  • Gort (from the move The Day the Earth Stood Still)
  • Lt. Cmdr. Data
  • LEGO® MINDSTORMS®
  • the Raibert Hopper
  • NavLab 5

Some of my suggestions would be:

Adam Link from the stories by Eando Binder, the first great robot fictional character

Primus and Helena from Karel ÄŒapek’s play, R. U. R., the original robots (although not technically what we think of as robots)

R. Daneel Olivaw, from Isaac Asimov’s The Caves of Steel

The Iron Giant

Helen O’Loy, from Lester del Rey’s story of the same name, possibly the first breakthrough robot science fiction story and one of the greatest science fiction stories of all time

The Roomba

Other suggestions?

    Rosie from the Jetsons.

The Daleks (Yeah, I know, not a robot, but hey…)

In the same vein, Marvin the Paranoid Android.

    Twiki (Buck Rogers).

    BENDER!!!!!!

  • Bender had occurred to me. Rosie is a wonderful suggestion.

Of course the gorgeous Daneel Olivaw should be nominated for the Robot Hall of Fame!!

I cannot think how he got left out like this. He’s quite simply the Best!

And also the loveable (and I think rather handsome) Giskard Reventlov should also be included. Again, can’t think how he got left out either!

All this beauty-and-brains should be in the No 1 spot.

  • Lurch, I mean RUK the android from the Star Trek episode “What are little girls made of?”

And the Stella series from the episode “I, Mudd.”

  • Mary Link

K-9 from Dr. Who (Tom Baker)!
