Snow day

Dec 1 2006 snowfall

Welcome to December! The last month of the year treated us to what’s for us a fairly unusual snowfall. This wasn’t the first snowfall of the year—that was in October. But it’s quite a substantial accumulation for this early in the season and it’s an icy, heavy, wet mess. Schools all over the area have cancelled and my wife got a call at 6:00am telling her not to bother coming in.  First thing this morning I received a flurry of calls cancelling my morning appointments (I’d planned on calling them and cancelling anyway so they saved me the trouble).

It was the puppies’ first real snow. When we let them out into it this morning they stared out at first suspiciously, then tentatively, and finally running, jumping, and gamboling in the stuff. For Samoyeds snow is like an old friend and our older dogs herald the return of their friend each year with recognition and joy. “Our friend is back!”

Time to go out and shovel again.

  • If we had a picture of DC, it would be overcast, wet ground, 70 degrees, bit of a breeze. It’s weird. Keep the snow, though, it’ll just lock DC down in gridlock.

  • I understand what we’ve got is heading your way. By the time it reaches you it will probably be cold rain.

I’m stuck in the Anchorage airport waiting for the Chicago airport to open, and have been rescheduled for the 10 p.m. flight which is *only* 10 hours from now. Sigh. I’m thinking my weekend in the Chicago area just got derailed. On the other hand, Chicagoans are pretty good at digging themselves out in a hurry.
