Violence marks teachers’ strike in Oaxaca

If you haven’t already done so, do yourself a favor and read this post from Mark in Mexico on what’s been going on down in his neck of the woods.

It’s without question one of the finest examples of citizen journalism I’ve seen from the blogosphere: pictures, on-site reporting, informed commentary. It just doesn’t get any better than this.

Why aren’t we getting this stuff from cable or broadcast news or from the big newspapers? Mexico is important to us. The demonstrations from a month or so ago should have told us that. It’s important to the millions of Mexican citizens who live here. It’s important to the millions more Mexican-Americans. It’s important to us all.

  • Thanks very much for the link and especially for the complement. I would have sent you a personal email but I don’t seem to find your address anywhere.

  • Geez. I sure would like to hear about this stuff on the news instead of the Duke lacross trial….thanks for bringing it to my attention. Now, I hope people will do something.

  • Interestingly, Triet, I picked up a local Spanish language newspaper and it had a huge page 3 article on the story (1 and 2 were devoted to local stories). Perhaps I’ll check in on the Spanish language TV newscasts and see if they’re covering it.
