Downtown Chicago Flood Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Chicago lake shore:

Powerful Hurricane Sandy has caused the National Weather Service to issue a lakeshore flood warning in Chicago.

During the warning, which goes into effect at 1 a.m. on Tuesday until 4 p.m. Wednesday, waves of 16 to 22 feet are likely to build along the Cook County Shoreline, reported the National Weather Service.

As Hurricane Sandy moves north to our latitude and slows, it will halt the west-to-east progress of high and low pressures across the Midwest and western Great Lakes, according to the weather service. This “blocking” will maintain the high pressure and dry air mass over much of the Mississippi River Valley, so no precipitation is expected for local areas away from the influence of the Great Lakes through the middle of next week.

In 1954 a ten foot seiche struck Chicago and there was some loss of life. I suspect we’ll be more prepared for whatever lakeshore flooding occurs but 16 to 22 foot waves are certain to cause some problems.

  • So any of you Chicagoans going to get your boards and hit the surf?

  • My freshman year college roommate brought his surf board and wet suit with him. Surfing is rarely good here in Chicago but this might be one of those rare occasions.

Surfs up brah! Beats the Hell out of the ankle snappers you usually see there. Time to shred those waves…just don’t be a Barney.

  • It’s just chilly here. Real Chilly. 34 degrees tonight with a cutting wind. Brrr.

Then 70 degrees for the rest of the week.

  • Seen the images of NYC?

Now why in the world would they build such a complex city on such low ground, SteveV?

  • Umm. In 1976, I was in NYC for the 4th of July. I took a ride on a a Staten Island ferry, with champagne and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band playing.

    What a mess.

  • Presumably Wall Street will ask the government to literally bail their butts out this time.

Their butts are leaky? [ Insert preferred joke about cracks and holes HERE. ]

  • Smartass.

  • Dave, if you have time, please go over to OTB and put up a post inviting the commenters to report in. There are a lot of them in the hurricane’s corridor.

I want to know how they fared.

  • Sandy may educate Al Gore and the UN on their ability to control and predict Earth’s climate and weather by ignoring the powerful force extending from the Sun’s core, ~120 AU beyond planet Earth [Nature 489, 20-21 (2012)]

  • I’m feeling pretty good this morning. My friend in Maryland has come through the initial part of the storm well. Annie Gottlieb, in Greenwich Village NYC, lost power last night but is otherwise fine. A friend up in Vermont hasn’t really had any bad effects at all.

I’ve got a friend who’s husband is in Delaware. I haven’t heard from them yet but it seems likely they’re doing okay given how Delaware fared.

    So far so good….

  • Annie reports that the sun has come out in lower Manhattan.

  • That’ll help.
