The Carnival of the Recipes is here!

Welcome to the 60th edition of the Carnival of the Recipes, a collection of recipes from some of the best cooks and bloggers in the blogosphere. Please look around while you’re here.

October has come to Chicago in earnest and brought with it something very unusual: the White Sox are actually on their way to the American League Championship Series. This is the first time the Southsiders have won a post-season series in 88 years.

There are other autumn pleasures to consider as well. The last of the harvest is still being brought in. Check here for a 50 state list of places you can still pick your own apples, pumpkins, and other delights.

Also, this is exactly the right time to order your chestnuts for the holidays. Here’s where I buy mine. Much nicer than the kind you get in the supermarket which have usually been improperly stored.

As the leaves begin to change and then to fall and the seasons change from summer to autumn and the first hints of winter begin to appear we all seem to take a nostalgic turn. That’s certainly reflected in this week’s Carnival with many old-fashioned, evocative, or just plain comfort-food recipes among our submissions.

Let the Carnival begin!

Meat

These Crockpot BBQ Beef Sandwiches are so simple to make that Chief Family Officer feels like apologizing for submitting them. No need to apologize, CFO, they look great!

Meatballs with a surprise inside. Check out these Mozzarella Meatballs from Jami Leigh.

Gourmet Professor Bainbridge prepares Slow cooker osso buco. If you’ve never made it, let me recommend osso buco in the most enthusiastic possible terms—it’s one of my favorite dishes. I see that Professor Bainbridge’s version differs from mine a little. I haven’t made it for a while but I seem to recall orange peel and fennel seed. And his has porcini mushrooms which are always good. Sounds really great.

Comfort food from KeeWee’s Corner: Cheeseburger Pie.

These Pork Chops and Spaghetti are very nostalgic for me.

Poultry and Eggs

The very first thing I ever cooked for my in-laws was Green Chile Stew. I’ll have to tell you about that sometime. Meanwhile Everything and Nothing has a recipe for it which looks great.

Technogypsy’s submission for this week is Grilled Dove Breasts.

Soups

7 Deadly Sins presents Gluttony Soup.

This Cheeseburger Soup from The Common Room should be just the thing for a cool fall evening.

Here’s a recipe from Oasis of Sanity for Casey’s Seafood Soup (caution: this post does not appear to be handled properly by Firefox).

Desserts and Sweets

I just discovered Honeycrisp apples not long ago and this recipe from A Weight Lifted for Apple Crumb Cake would be a very good use for them.

PractiGal wonders “What’s fall without a delicious homemade apple pie?!” and bakes up a Genesee Valley Apple Crumb Pie.

Caltechgirl of Not Exactly Rocket Science has a recipe for a genuine old-fashioned sweet that reminds me of church socials in the long ago and far away: Mama’s Divinity.

Mensa Barbie’s submission this week is Melon Sherbet Pudding. This is actually quite a simple and tasty recipe—what used to be referred to as freezer sorbet. Definitely worth a try (especially if you’re trying to nail down a reputation as a gourmet).

If you’re looking for something good with your morning coffee, Morning Coffee and Afternoon Tea suggests these Cranberry Bran Muffins.

Drinks

Blog D’Ellison whips up some Chatham Artillery Punch. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve had this. My only comment: these people are professionals. This is the sort of beverage which Southern ladies in my youth could seemingly drink with impunity but which could knock Nawthenuhs on their, uh, behinds.

Booklore shows us how to make Smoooooooothies.

Snacks and Appetizers

Taleena of Sun Comprehending Glass offers Pumpkin Seed Popcorn Balls if you’re feeling in a harvesty sort of mood. And if you’re carving jack-o-lanterns you’re bound to have some pumpkin seeds around.

Breads, pasta, dumplings, etc.

Oasis of Sanity has a recipe for 3, 2, 1… bread! (caution: this post does not appear to be handled properly by Firefox).

This simple Fettucine Alfredo recipe from In the Headlights would be mighty nice for a Sunday evening supper. It must be something about the weather—I made something very similar last Sunday night.

One for the Road has real comfort food for us: Grandma’s Macaroni and Cheese and notes (in genuine Wisconsin fashion) that there’s no such thing as too much cheese.

Some of the best recipes are found handwritten in the backs of cookbooks as Pajama Pundits learned. Here are Aunt Juanita’s Biscuits. They call for yeast, baking soda, and baking powder. Talk about suspenders and belt! Or belt-loosening in this case.

Sauces and Odds and Ends

If you’re in the sort of mood in which nothing else but Pickled Garlic will do (or find yourself with a lot of garlic sitting around), Triticale has just the recipe for you. And has some suggestions for using it that sound quite appealing.

  • Fall recipes? It was over 90º here last week! (Hence the smoothies.)

Looking forward to the weather when I can actually use some of these!

  • Delicious presentation. 🙂

  • Are trackbacks broken?

I tried to trackback here: Carnival of the Recipes and it did not work. What version of Wordpress are you running? There are some trackback bugs in earlier versions.

  • I don’t think trackbacks are broken—I’ve been getting them from other sites on this post. The Wordpress version I’m running is 1.5.1.3
